  • Williams honored by United Way

     LaRue Countian Rita Williams was nominated by her peers to receive recognition for her positive contributions to the community. 

    Williams was presented the Voice of LaRue County Award at United Way’s recent Thank You event because of her influential role as advocate and volunteer on behalf of the United Way of Central Kentucky.

    Sentence modified
    Atari Markeem Hardin (1982) was ordered to serve 75 additional days May 5 in LaRue Circuit Court after testimony was heard from the LaRue County Attorney’s Child Support Office.

    Costs and fees waived
    Costs and fees ($410) were waived May 5 for Adam Davy Lamoreaux in a child support case. Lamoreaux lives in Salt Lake City and the court determined it would cost more to transport him back to Kentucky.

  • Accurately measure when using small quantities of dry pesticides

      Backpack and handheld sprayers are often used around the farm or home to treat small areas. However, most pesticide labels focus on mixing and applying pesticide in quantities that far exceed the sizes of common backpack and handheld sprayers.

    As a result, accurate conversions must be made to avoid a spray mix or application rate that could result in a treatment that is either stronger than recommended or too weak to be effective.

  • International flavors anticipated

     Several weeks of sunshine and plenty of rain have given the garden a really nice start, thus far. Zinnia, marigold, sunflower, green beans, and purple corn are all emerging and visible.

    Unfortunately, so has the Johnson grass. I half-heartedly hacked at a few blades but my resolve was not there as the ground is kinda muddy from the recent severe weather.

  • Ola Cobb named Nationwide's Employee of the Month

     Ola Cobb has been selected as the May Employee of the Month for Nationwide Uniform.

    She has been employed with Nationwide since February 1977 and is under the supervision of JoAnn Pearman in the trouser department. 

  • Gray is Summer Intern

     Felicia Gray is working at The LaRue County Herald News this summer through the Kentucky Press Association’s intern program.

    Felicia is a student at Campbellsville University where she majors in public relations and psychology. Her parents are Tim and Jill Gray of Magnolia.

    She will be covering school board meetings, the LaRue County Fair, writing feature articles and taking lots of photographs. 

    The internship lasts 10 weeks.

  • Pvt. Murrell graduates

     Pvt. Jarrod Wayne Murrell graduated May 15, 2014, from Fort Jackson Army Base in South Carolina.

    He is the son of DeAnna Murrell and George Hobby, the brother of Courtney, Wayne, Bonnie and Anthony Jr., and the uncle of Jonathan, all of Elizabethtown. His grandparents are Charles and Margaret Brown of Buffalo. Great-grandparents are Freddy and Iris Hoagland of Campbellsville.

  • Kidd graduates from University of Louisville

     Autumn Kidd graduated May 10, 2014, from the University of Louisville. 

    She received a bachelor of science in nursing degree. 

    She was a member and president of the Chi Omega Fraternity and was on the executive board for the University of Louisville Dance Marathon. She was recently hired for an RN position at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. 

    She is the daughter of Larry and Sandy Kidd of Hodgenville.

  • Breaking Bread Bakery: Made from scratch

     The sweet smell of baking bread, cakes, cookies and muffins has been wafting from a small shop on South Walters Street since February. The “Breaking Bread Bakery” (a not-so-subtle reference to the Bible) sells bread and other goods – all made from scratch.

    For lunch, they also offer a bag lunch, which includes a sandwich (made with their own bread), chips, and a soda.

    Fran Dowell of Magnolia is the owner. She bakes everything herself and says that since it opened, the bakery has been “pretty steady but not overwhelming.”
