    Beef Cattle Association meets Jan. 13

    The LaRue County Beef Cattle Association will meet 6:30 p.m. Jan. 13 at the LaRue County Extension office in Hodgenville. Various items, including the State Convention, will be discussed. A meal will be served. All interested producers are invited. For more information, contact the Extension office at 270-358-3401.

  • Pick up a livestock calendar today

    Records are important. If you have a need for a calendar to help keep track of your livestock production records, we may have a calendar for you at the LaRue County Extension Office.

    The 2015 Beef Integrated Resource Management Wall Calendar is very useful for cow-calf producers. The 18-month calendar is designed for either a fall calving or spring calving herd, and lists due dates for each breeding date as well as management suggestions for cattle, forages and records for each month.

  • Money allocated to local ag programs

    In 2014, more than $33 million in state and county Agricultural Development Funds were disbursed in grants and loans throughout the state for agricultural investments.

    The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board, chaired by Gov. Steve Beshear, approved an additional $10,355,386 for 48 agricultural diversification and rural development programs and projects in December, totaling more than $43 million for the year.

  • January brings annual ag events

    The 2015 Kentucky Fruit and Vegetable Conference and Trade Show will be Jan. 5-6 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Lexington. The Conference features a trade show and a host of concurrent session topics related to fruit, vegetable, grapes and wines, and organic production and marketing.

    The UK Winter Wheat Meeting will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. CST Jan. 6 in Hopkinsville. This meeting will feature several speakers discussing rainfall and fertilizers, wheat outlook, DON, head scab and survey results.

    This time of the year can be very difficult for those of us who are trying to watch what we eat. With all of the homemade candies, cookies, and treats sitting in front of us, it can be next to impossible to skip the goodies completely. Moderation should be your “friend” in fighting off the temptation of eating a whole pecan pie instead of one piece.

    In early December each year, the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture’s Department of Agricultural Economics releases their annual Agricultural Situation and Outlook covering the country’s and state’s general farm economy, and 12 specific farm commodities important to Kentucky.

  • Writer analyzes the language of barns

    The little barn in this picture can be seen from Ky. 470. Travel east on 470 one half mile or less after you cross McDougal Creek. Look to your right and there it is, about 400 feet from the highway.

    I’ll name this little barn “Bantam Barn” because it is so small. It is not far from two other barns I featured some time ago. I dubbed those two old barns Grover and Wilson.
