• Choose to be Blessed

God through Moses set before the children of Israel the choice of a blessing or a curse (Deuteronomy 11:26-28). If they were to be blessed by God, they are told to listen to and follow the commandments of the Lord. The curse would come if they did not listen to and obey God.

The Book of Deuteronomy is Moses’ last plea to a stubborn people. God is giving them a choice between a blessing or a curse. For us today this seems like a no-brainer.

  • Trusting God

Worry is common to all people at one time or another.  Henry Ward Beecher said, “It is not work that kills men, it is worry. Work is healthy, you can hardly put more upon a man than he can bear. Worry is rust upon the blade. It is not the revolution that destroys the machinery, but the friction.”

  • The ‘tocayo’ of Christ

In my family we have two new babies: Lily Aaron and Zachary Jack.

Lily is my niece Jennifer’s third daughter and Zach is my nephew Shane’s third son. Both babies were born just a few weeks apart, Lily in July and Zachary in August. My sister now has six grandchildren.

If Lily had been a boy she would be Jack Aaron. Jack is my dad’s name. Aaron is Lily’s dad Marc’s middle name.

    Got all that?

  • God’s Grace is Glorious

I love a good story. Recently I read one that meets all the qualifications for me. The late Vance Havner was a Baptist evangelist and he related the following story told to him by a friend.

Dr. Clyde Turner pastored a church in Kentucky. A young boy in his church was a holy terror that no one could handle. The boy stopped coming to church and Dr. Turner said he nor anyone else rushed to persuade the youth to return.

  • Where is the fruit?

A few years ago a television commercial that received a lot of playing time asked the question, “Where’s the beef?” The question in the Gospel of Luke about the barren tree was, “Where’s the fruit?” The owner of the vineyard came looking for three years, but found no fruit.

The owner in the story represents God. The fig tree could apply to Israel, but there is a personal application where we are the tree. The owner planted, watered, dressed and fertilized the tree. No labor was spared on the tree.

  • Choo-choosing to unhitch from the crazy train

Just this morning my friend Tara and I were wondering if it’s possible to be addicted to drama.

She calls it being on the crazy train. She said when the crazy train comes around and she hitches a ride on it she’s firing on all cylinders, she’s in high gear and overdrive, not to mention mixing metaphors.

She feels alive, she says, yet at the same time she hates it with all her might.
