• Be All That You Can Be

Back in 1981 the army had the jingle “Be all that you can be.” Their target was young men and they were seeking to appeal to the pride of these young men.

The army may have just recently used this jingle, but God has for a long time appealed not just to young men, but for all of us “to be all we can be.”  God’s desires for us are greater than any desires we may have for ourselves.

  • Attributes of A Winner

The countdown is on much to the chagrin of many wives. Major League Baseball Playoffs will eventually lead to the American and National league champions playing for the World Series title.

Recently my wife and I were in a group of 42 people on a Koinonia bus tour where we spent some time in Cooperstown at the Baseball Hall of Fame. I enjoyed seeing plaques of all those who had been selected for the honor to be included among the best of the best.

  • ‘Bless me, Father, for I have sinned’

Several times a week I pass a church that has a signboard out front advertising confessions on Saturdays.

I confess that when I was a kid I went to a church that had confession booths, only I thought behind the dark wooden doors was either a broom closet or it was where they kept the devil.

Kids think crazy things, don’t they?

When I was around seven-years-old, I got to go behind the wooden doors and confess my sins, which mostly consisted of being mean to my sister and brothers as well as disobeying my parents.

  • Peace In A Noisy World

Emotional stress is at a high level today. Many doctors agree that stress in one way or another is at the root of most of the diseases that plague us today. Stress is all around us. The only cure is given in Colossians 3:15 when Paul says, “Let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts.”

  • Crouching kitties at the door

For the past few months we’ve been taking care of our youngest daughter’s two cats, Mohawk and Target, while our daughter spends some time with my sister in California. They’re both gray tabby cats, each about 10 years old.

My husband calls Mohawk “Hawkeye” or “Hawk” and I’ve nicknamed Target “the weasel” because he’s long and he slinks through the house like I imagine a weasel would.

  • ‘That’s good stuff, Harry’

I’ve mentioned my friend Harry before. He is 86ish and used to golf every day, but one day several years ago he decided he’d had enough and hung up his clubs, or whatever it is you do when you stop golfing.

Harry and his wife, Charlotte, have sat behind me in church for as long as I can remember.

When we built the sanctuary 12 years ago, Harry and Charlotte scoped the place out and chose their spot on the second row, second section on the left, Saturday night service.

I chose my spot on the first row, right in front of Harry.
