The last thing Regina McDowell told her husband Gary was “Do not buy it.” when he left to check out an auction of the former Ed’s Stop & Shop. They had been handing out water and orange slices at the Tour de LaRue bicycle ride and Gary said he was just curious about the auction. “Next thing you know I called Regina and told her ‘We have a store!’”

Lincoln General Store has been opened for two and a half years. In the time they’ve owned the property they have completely remodeled the store. “Everything is new,” said Gary, “Including state-of-the-art 24 hour gas pumps and tanks that detect even the slightest drop of water in the tank.”

When they started remodeling one thing led to another. “We put in new tile and the shelving looked outdated. Next thing you know everything was all new.” said Gary.

Their store includes a tanning salon. You can purchase hunting and fishing license as well as fishing supplies and bait. They also offer a number of Kentucky Proud products, fresh produce, locally produced fresh sausage, souvenirs as well as hot plate lunch Monday through Friday with daily specials like chicken and dumplings or fried catfish and hushpuppies.

“Everybody says we have the best fish in LaRue County.” said Gary.

Regina makes the hushpuppies by hand and Gary’s mom, Essie, cooks on Friday. “You have to stand there and roll each one in the oil as they fry so they keep their shape.” said Regina.

Lincoln General Store has a deli, sandwiches can be ordered 7 days a week. Also at Lincoln General Store you can get breakfast 7 days a week as early as 5 a.m. Monday through Friday.

“We really appreciate each and every customer that walks in our store, whether they come in to buy something or sit around and talk.” Regina said.

“We also try to treat our employees well. We make sure they all have person in charge training. We treat them the way we’d like to be treated.”

The McDowells pride themselves on keeping their store clean and neat. “I go around checking all the dates on items, it goes back to my employment with Pepsi making sure nothing was outdated.”

“We get a lot of tourists, but we have more customers that are regulars and loyal to our business.” Regina said.

The McDowells son’s, Cody and Brady, also help out in the store.

They are remodeling the motel that is adjacent to the General Store and hope to open it soon. There are also plans to one day remodel and open the restaurant that is in the second half of the General Store building.

“Every customer that walks in Lincoln General Store is treated like a friend. I try to talk to everybody that comes in.” Gary adds. “We’re kind of rare; not too many country folks run stores like this anymore.”
