Shirley’s Fabrics is sewing miracles

Shirley Jones has been sewing for herself since she was a teenager. She has been sewing for other people for more than 30 years.

Shirley’s Fabrics in Hodgenville has been open for eight years. Before that, Jones did sewing in the back of her husband’s barbershop, Jones Barber Shop. When her husband died, she decided to continue working at the shop and expand to fill the barber shop space.

Jones said others encouraged her to open the shop: “ ‘We can’t buy a spool of thread in Hodgenville’ they said. So I kept the shop.”

She does alterations and sells fabrics and sewing notions. Customers bring in clothing for hemmings, new zippers or repairs to seams or rips in material. “The shop is also used by crafters and quilters,” Jones said. Since she has such a history of sewing, she has made many items from innumerable wedding dresses to curtains and table coverings. Now her focus tends to be more on alterations and repairs.

She carries many bolts of fabric; some of the selections are spring solids, tone on tone, cotton prints, flannel, college prints and homespun. She has “fat quarters,” half-yard fabric remnants for quilts and projects.

Jones has a quilting machine that she uses to finish quilts. Customers can also drop off sewing machines for repairs.

A friend, Vivian Dunn, who goes to church with Jones at Freedom’s Way Assembly of God, stops in at times to visit and maybe even help out some. She relates a story about a recent customer who complained of an uncomfortable boot fit. Jones added material into the top of the boots, and the customer was pleased with the results. “She works miracles,” Dunn said.

Shirley’s Fabrics is open 9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at 113 N. Lincoln Blvd. in Hodgenville. The phone number is 270-358-8077.
