The LaRue County Sheriff’s Office will be sending 5 girls between the ages of 8 and 11 to the Kentucky Sheriff’s Girls Ranch on July 14 for absolutely free. “It’s a really good camp,” said LaRue County Sheriff Russell McCoy, “And it doesn’t cost the family anything.”

Over the course of 6 days children have the opportunity to build self esteem, moral character, and are taught to respect themselves, others, and law enforcement officers; and have a little fun. “They do swimming, fishing, arts and crafts, sports, archery, gaga ball, cookouts, and much more.” Sheriff McCoy explained. First responders and law enforcement officers visit as well to speak to the children.

The camp is funded by different law enforcement agencies across the state through fundraisers held throughout the year. “It gives the kids who can’t go to other camps during the summer an opportunity.”

Applications can be picked up and turned back into the LaRue County Sheriff’s Office, located at 209 West High Street Suite 6 Hodgenville. The applications are first come first serve. However, every application turned in after the first will be kept and numbered. If one of the first 5 children is unable to attend the camp, the next application will be selected. The children will be driven to the camp, and picked up from the camp, by the LaRue County Sheriff’s Office. All the parents will need to do is bring their children to the Sheriff’s Office.

The girls will head to camp from July 14 - 19. A list of items the children are required to bring with them will be provided as well as medical forms, which will need to be brought to the Health Department to fill out. If a child’s twelfth birthday is during the week of camp, as in if one of the girls turned 12 on July 16, they will still be allowed to attend. All paperwork must be turned in by July 8.
