A Hodgenville hardware store has been serving LaRue County for several decades.

Smith’s Hardware is located at 1018 Lincoln Farm Road in Hodgenville. Their hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. However, the store is closed the last Saturday of each month.

Owner Steve Smith said the idea for Smith’s Hardware was established in the early 1950s with his grandfather Gerald “J.E.” Smith.

“My grandfather was a plumber, electrician and he eventually got into the heating and air business. Not long after that he started the gas business with Smith’s LP Gas here in Hodgenville,” Smith said. “To support all of that, you have to have a hardware store, so he then opened up the hardware store around 1961.”

Smith’s Hardware was originally located on the square in Hodgenville before the store moved to a location in Smith Plaza in Hodgenville in 1979 and then to their current location in 2005. The store carries a wide variety of hardware supplies including plumbing materials, electric materials, tools, fasteners, chains and much more.

Smith said the store has remained in his family for generations and that they plan on keeping it a family business for years to come.

“My father Murrell inherited the store from my grandfather and then I inherited it from him when he retired. I plan on passing it along to my son Brian,” Smith said. “We provide a service to people here in the county, so they don’t have to drive miles away to one of the surrounding counties for their hardware needs. We take pride in that and want to provide for their hardware needs without them having to leave the county.”
