Detours expected at Upton exit

Motorists traveling Ky. 224 across Interstate 65 may experience short delays for the next few months as overpass construction continues.

A signal will be activated this afternoon to allow alternating one-way traffic over the interstate, according to the Transportation Cabinet District 4 office. Demolition work on the existing overpass will allow for completion of a new span in order to accommodate widening I-65 to six lanes. The signal is expected to remain active until early June.

Beginning at midnight, demolition will require closure of northbound I-65 lanes beneath the existing structure. Traffic will be routed off of I-65 at Exit 76 in Upton, across Ky. 224 and back onto the interstate via the northbound on ramp. Northbound delays are possible. Lanes beneath the bridge will reopen by 8 a.m. EDT Wednesday.

Wednesday night, the remainder of the existing structure will be demolished, requiring closure of southbound I-65 lanes. Just as with tonight’s traffic plan, southbound motorists will be routed off of the interstate at Exit 76, across Ky. 224 and back onto the interstate via the southbound on ramp. Southbound delays will be possible Wednesday.

Southbound lanes beneath the overpass will reopen by 8 a.m. Thursday, the cabinet said.
