Avery to speak at ECTC

-A A +A

Environmental social activist and Kentucky resident Sam Avery is coming to Elizabethtown Community and Technical College to discuss his recent book on the controversial Keystone XL natural gas pipeline, The Pipeline and the Paradigm.

A former instructor at ECTC as well as a certified solar installer and trainer in nonviolent resistance techniques, Avery will discuss the need for “a new, larger worldview (or paradigm)” that puts economic necessities within a larger frame that includes preserving the environment.

Avery believes that we have not yet learned to see past what he calls the "economic paradigm," or the assumption that economic growth and consumer demand should determine the directions we take as a society. He suggests that a more appropriate worldview, what he calls the "ecologic paradigm," would include human activities in relation to the oceans, the forests, and the weather. “The economy will always be with us,” Avery writes, “but it is, and should be, fully contained by the ecology.”

Avery will speak at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 in Room 212 of the Regional Postsecondary Center on the campus of Elizabethtown Community and Technical College in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. All community members are invited to attend this free event.
