The LaRue County Hawks lost Tuesday night in the opening round of the 18th District Tournament.

Third-seeded Green County built a double-digit lead less than 8 minutes and never trailed in a 65-61 win over the second-seeded Hawks at Hawk gym.

LaRue County shot 34.5 percent in the first half to Green County’s scorching 60 percent, but the Hawks were still within 34-27 at the break after senior forward Caleb Sheffer made 1-of-2 free throws during a lonely trip to the foul line since he was fouled at the buzzer.

LaRue County, which had closed within four points late in the second quarter, climbed within two possessions three times in the third quarter after trailing 36-27 early in the second half.

Freshman guard Shane King, who had 12 points off the Hawks’ bench, tied it at 60 with 1:10 left in the game on his second fourth-quarter 3 off an assist from sophomore guard Cameron Dawson (13 points).

The tie lasted just 13 seconds as Green County answered with a basket and led the rest of the way.

LaRue County missed a 3 with about 38 seconds left, but in a rush, Green County lost the ball out of bounds. LaRue County couldn’t get a shot off on its ensuing possession as LaRue County senior guard Micah Wiseman was fouled. Wiseman made 1-of-2 free throws as he finished with 10 points.
