Various LaRue County High School athletic programs are offering local youth opportunities to get involved with summer camps.

Below is a preview of the summer youth camps:

    Girls Basketball

The LCHS girls basketball program is offering a skills camp July 21-23 for any kindergarten through eighth-grade student. Lady Hawks Coach Travis Wootton, along with his staff and players, will offer fundamental instruction.

The kindergarten to third-grade class will be 10-11:30 a.m.; fourth-grade to eighth-grade will be noon to 2 p.m.

  • SOFTBALL: Gardner, Skaggs to...

Two Lady Hawks – senior pitcher/first baseman Brigitte Skaggs and senior center fielder Peyton Gardner – were named to the 5th Region Fastpitch Coaches Association’s All-Region Team.

Each of the 18 schools in the region could nominate four players for the team, but coaches couldn’t vote for their own players. No player was unanimous and it took nine votes for a player to make the 16-player squad. Coaches could vote for 15 opposing players.

Skaggs was a preseason All-Region pick.

    Free fishing weekend

Kentucky observes free fishing weekend on June 7-8. Every year during the first full weekend of June, anglers do not need a fishing license or even a trout permit. Normally, people over the age of 15 must have a license to fish away from their property. Normal size limits and creel limits for fish still apply during free fishing weekend, however.

  • State Parks to host Unbridled...

Kentucky State Parks will host the 2014 Unbridled Adventure Race Series, three adventure races that will test participants’ physical and mental skills for beginners and veteran racers.

The series is being conducted at Kentucky State Parks in partnership with Flying Squirrel Adventures.

Each race will include mountain biking on trail and road, trekking on and off-trail, paddling on flat or slow-moving water, and navigation with topo map and compass.

McKamey overcame a slow start against Laskey, falling behind 4-2 in the first set before winning 10 of the final 11 games.

  • Lady Hawks reflect on softball...

The Lady Hawks softball team (16-16) ended their season last week in the first round of the 5th Region Tourney to Central Hardin. Although they did not end their season the way they wanted to, there is a lot to be proud of for the Lady Hawks.

Fifth-year Head Coach Aaron Howell said the season was “one of highs and lows.” Those highs started early as the Lady Hawks won seven out of their first nine games. One of those losses was to the defending State Champion, Greenwood’s Lady Gators, 2-5.

  • Hawk baseball has a bright future

Leading into the 2014 baseball campaign, Hawks’ second-year head coach Eric Allen knew he would have a challenge replacing six seniors with a young group of players coming up. This was nothing new. When he acquired the job in 2013, he had to replace eight seniors.

Junior Koy Lindsey and freshman Cameron Dawson were the only full-time starters from the 2013 squad, while sophomore Colby Skaggs and senior Dylon Hedgespeth also saw action at the varsity level.
