  • Wolverines play to raise funds...

    Two local organizations are teaming up for the second time to help prevent LaRue County kids from going hungry on the weekends.

    This August, the Kentucky Wolverines, a minor league football team from Hardin County, will reform a partnership with the LaRue County BackPack Program, a non-profit organization for local kids in need. The Wolverines, who first collaborated with the BackPack Program in 2008, will host the Wolverine Classic, a charity football game, at LaRue County High School to raise money for the backpacks. The team will play the Miami Valley Warriors.

  • Whitlocks score at Bellarmine...

    On July 17, the 5th and 6th Region (West) All-Stars defeated the 7th and 8th Region team (East), 82-78 in overtime.

    Lady Hawks Lyndsay Whitlock and Valerie Whitlock, both seniors, were chosen by 5th Region coaches to play in the 24th annual Bellarmine Roundball Classic.

    The game, sponsored by the Kentucky High School Coaches Association, matched the top players in the Class of 2011.

    Valerie Whitlock scored two points; Lyndsay Whitlock scored one point.    

  • School open houses tonight offer...

    Signups for LaRue County Youth Soccer continue during the open house events from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, at Hodgenville and Abraham Lincoln elementary schools.

    A final registration also is set from 10 a.m. until noon Aug. 7 at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School.

    Games will be played at ALES.

    No signups will be accepted after 5 p.m. Aug. 13. Penalty of $10 for late registration after Aug. 7.

  • New offensive coordinator joins...

    LaRue County High School’s Hawks varsity football team kicks off the 2010 season not only with a different offense, but also with a new offensive coordinator.

    “We’ve hired Mike Lewis, a man with over 30 years head coaching experience,” said Rodney Armes, in his 15th season at the Hawks’ helm.

  • Free round of golf offered to...

    Kentucky State Parks will participate in the Professional Golf Association’s Play Golf America promotion through July 31.

    At any of the 18 park courses, players 18 years of age or younger may play a free round and smack a free bucket of balls on the driving range when accompanied by a paying adult. Carts are not included.  

  • Newton playing for Marauders

    Jordan Newton, a former LaRue County High School sports standout, went on to play baseball at Western Kentucky University and was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the sixth round of the 2006 draft.

    The 24-year-old is now playing for the Bradenton Marauders, Pittsburgh’s Class A Advanced affiliate in the Florida State League. Newton was cut by the Tigers earlier this season and began playing for the New Jersey Jackals in an independent league.

  • Lady Hawks attend UK's...

    Lady Hawk volleyball tryouts were held July 15-16 at LaRue County High School gymnasium. Coach Ben Schell took his players through some tough volleyball drills both days. Sixteen players were present on Friday morning participating in the workout. 

    Expectations are high for the team. One of six seniors, 17-year-old Angelina Marcum, has been playing volleyball since the fifth grade. 

  • LaRue All-Stars fall in state...

    The LaRue County 8- and 9-year-old All-Stars played in the state tournament over the weekend.


    LaRue County went 0-3 in its pool-play games at Chautauqua Park in Owensboro. The team fell 18-2 to Germantown on Thursday, 13-6 to Okolona on Friday and 14-4 to Fern Creek on Saturday.

    No other statistics were available.


    LaRue County was among 16 teams in the machine-pitch tournament at Crosby Park in Louisville.

  • DiStefano leaves LaRue to become...

    After 15 years teaching and coaching at LaRue County, Mielle DiStefano has accepted a guidance counselor’s position at Summer Shade Elementary School in Metcalfe County.

    “I felt it was time to do something different, and I’m excited about the opportunity,” said DiStefano, who during her tenure at LaRue served as assistant basketball coach (two years) and high school volleyball coach (five years).
