  • National motocross champ off to...

    Not only has Reese Merrick, a 2014 LaRue County High School graduate, earned a diploma for his work in school, he also is the holder of state and national motocross titles, claiming his first when he was 7 years old.

    “I was sitting in our living room, watching motocross on TV with my stepdad,” the 18-year-old Upton area resident recalled. “I wanted to do what they were doing, and I told him that I wished I had a bike so that I could do that.”

    Sports pre-participation physicals

    Sports pre-participation physicals will be available 5:30 p.m. July 1 at LaRue County High School. Cost is $10 per person, cash or check made out to Hardin Memorial Hospital. Athletes must bring their KHSAA pre-participation physical evaluation form, with the first and fourth pages completed and signed by the student and parent guardian. Forms are available at www.khsaa.org/forms/ge04.pdf.

    Golf scramble

    Fort Knox Federal Credit Union is sponsoring a golf scramble June 20 to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters. The event will be held at Lindsey Golf Course, 4024 Bullion Blvd., Fort Knox.     Campbellsville University athletics is expanding once again. Co-ed collegiate bass fishing will become CU’s next intercollegiate varsity sport, beginning in 2014-15, said Rusty Hollingsworth, CU athletic director.

    After 10 years as head coach during which she led her LaRue County High School cheerleaders to a state title and two national final appearances, Tara Wooden is stepping down.

    “I am just ready to spend more time at home with my husband,” she said. “It’s a really long season, June through March, and while I loved every minute of coaching, it’s time to take a step back and focus on other priorities.”

     Youth softball meeting

    There will be a LaRue County Youth Softball meeting at 6 p.m. June 12 at the LaRue County Park and Recreation building. New officers will be elected and future activities discussed.

    FREE: Basketball camp

    Paul Handley will sponsor a free basketball camp for students in grades 1-12 from 8:30 a.m. to noon June 17-20 at his home, 1982 Campbellsville Road, Hodgenville.     Various LaRue County High School athletic programs are offering local youth opportunities to get involved with summer camps.

    Below is a preview of the summer youth camps:

    Girls Basketball

    The LCHS girls basketball program is offering a skills camp July 21-23 for any kindergarten through eighth-grade student. Lady Hawks Coach Travis Wootton, along with his staff and players, will offer fundamental instruction.

    The kindergarten to third-grade class will be 10-11:30 a.m.; fourth-grade to eighth-grade will be noon to 2 p.m.
