  • J.C. Spalding completes Centre...

    J.C. Spalding of New Haven, a student at Centre College in Danville, was a member of the college’s soccer team during the fall season.

    He is the son of Mike and Sandy Spalding of New Haven and a financial economics major.

    Spalding played goalkeeper, recording a shutout against Trine University.

    He was a member of the All-District and All-Region teams his junior and senior years at Nelson County High School and a member of the Academic All-State Team all four years.

  • Mat Hawks take fifth in Smoky...

    The LaRue County Mat Hawks took fifth in the 18-team Smoky Mountain Duals Dec. 22-23.

    The team went 4-0 on the first day of competition, defeating Beech, Tenn. 65-5; Soddy-Daisy, Tenn. 36-25; All-Stars 84-0; and Gibbs, Tenn. 63-6. The Hawks lost to Gilmer, Ga. 43-14.

    Jefferson, Ga. (9-0) beat Gilmer 34-20 to win the title.

    Results from the first day of the Smoky Mountain Duals:

  • Billy Howell named to Kentucky...

    Billy Howell, owner of Billy Howell Funeral Chapel in Hodgenville, has been named the newest inductee into the Kentucky Motorsports Hall of Fame.

    “It was a complete surprise to me,” said Howell. “I didn’t even know there was such a thing.”

    His induction is no surprise, however, to others who watched him race in the ASA, ARCA and NASCAR short track circuits.

    Dave Huber, with Kentucky Motorsports Hall of Fame, called Howell a “smart driver.”

  • Davenport mentioned among All-...

    Tyler Davenport, LaRue County senior offensive lineman, was named honorable mention in the 2009 Kentucky High School All-State first and second teams.

    The players were selected by 19 media representatives from across the state.

  • Hawks learn to play to the end

    The LaRue County Hawks varsity basketball team is spending much of the holiday break in tournaments.

    The Hawks beat a pesky St. Henry team 72-69 at the North American Stainless Classic held at Carroll County High School Dec. 21.

    Kyle Sheeran led the way with 20 points on four of six three-point attempts. While pleased with the win, Coach Paul Childress was not happy with the Hawks’ defense in the first half.

  • DeVries retires from KHSAA

    Kentucky High School Athletic Association Commissioner Brigid DeVries announced at a news conference Dec. 16 that she will retire after 30-plus years of employment with the organization. Her retirement will be effective July 9.  

    DeVries was the first female to head the KHSAA.

  • Lady Hawks win tournament title

    The Lady Hawks, now 6-3, recorded a tournament title Tuesday night by defeating the host team in the Lady Colonel Christmas Classic.

    LaRue County defeated Caverna 57-39 in the championship game.

    In earlier tournament action, Coach Travis Wootton's team beat Warren East, 66-44 on Saturday in the Caverna Christmas Classic and outplayed Red Boiling Springs, Tenn. Monday.

  • Mat Hawks undefeated in Duals

    The LaRue County Mat Hawks went undefeated Friday and Saturday in the Region 2 Wrestling Duals at Fort Knox.

    LaRue County went 5-0 with wins over Danville (68-9), North Hardin (54-17), Fort Knox (76-0), Boyle County (78-6) and Anderson County (75-3).

    Spencer Hines (103), Nick Paden (112), Raymundo Perez (119), Caleb Canter (125), Shaquille Cox (130), Shelby Floyd (135), Vince Couch (160), Bernard Ray (189) and Drew Newberry (215) all went unbeaten.

  • LaRue will host National Guard...

    The LaRue County Hawks will host the National Guard Holiday Classic Dec. 28-30.

    The Hawks meet Webster County 7 p.m. Dec. 28 with the winner of the game playing the winner of North Bullitt vs. Harrison County at 8:30 p.m.

    If LaRue continues in the winner’s bracket, they will play again 7 p.m. Dec. 29. The loser plays 5:30 p.m. Dec. 29.

    In the second bracket, West Carter meets Whitley County 4 p.m. while South Oldham plays Edmonson County 5:30 p.m. Dec. 28.

    The winners of each bracket will play for the championship 8 p.m. Dec. 30.
