  • REGIONAL BASEBALL: Central...

On first glance, the bottom half of the 5th Region Baseball Tournament bracket appears to be loaded.

Three of the four teams with winning records in the tournament, which will be held at Central Hardin, are in bottom half of the bracket. All three teams have 24 or more victories.

Defending region champion Central Hardin, the 17th District champion, meets the 19th District runner-ups Nelson County Cardinals (12-20) at 6:30 p.m. Monday. The Bruins (29-4) beat Nelson County, 12-0 on May 14.

  • REGIONAL SOFTBALL: LaRue plays...

Last year, the Central Hardin Lady Bruins hoped to meet the Green County Lady Dragons in the 5th Region Softball Tournament final.

That didn’t happen. And it won’t happen this year, either.

During Saturday morning’s region tournament draw meeting at host LaRue County, the ninth-ranked Lady Dragons (28-6) and the No. 11 Lady Bruins (31-4) both drew into the top bracket, meaning they could meet in the early semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

  • BASEBALL: HAWKS WIN DISTRICT...

LaRue County completed its decade-long 18th District Baseball Tournament sweep.

And go figure, the Hawks capped it off by winning their 10th consecutive district championship by 10 runs. There were 10s all around.

Junior Slade Owens had three hits and four RBIs, junior Kyle Sheeran broke out of a hitting funk and junior pitcher Wesley Kessinger untangled himself out of a handful of jams as LaRue County defeated Green County, 11-1 in six innings in Wednesday night’s championship game at Hart County.

  • 18th District Baseball: Hawks...

MUNFORDVILLE — LaRue County coach Chris Price thought the Hawks looked way too timid Monday evening.

In the first five minutes, they allowed the first two batters to reach base. They committed an error. And they looked nothing like the nine-time defending 18th District Baseball Tournament champions.

Then came a 27-minute lightning delay, during which Price reminded the Hawks to become more assertive.

  • DISTRICT SOFTBALL: Lady Hawks...

Brigitte Skaggs had the Green County Lady Dragons on the ropes.

The LaRue County freshman pitcher had struck out nine batters through 6 1/3 innings, keeping the Lady Hawks in the game against the four-time defending 18th District Softball Tournament champions at Hart County High School on Tuesday.

    Then came the seventh inning.

Second-seeded LaRue County committed two costly errors – including one that led to the game-winning run – as top-seeded Green County rallied for a 3-2 victory to win its fifth consecutive district title.

  • LaRue County has rubber match...

All year long, LaRue County coach Aaron Howell has preached to his Lady Hawks about not letting errors snow ball.
Too often the Lady Hawks let one error turn into two. Or three. And then the runs came.
What often followed was a late-game collapse as the Lady Hawks lost eight games in which they led after the fifth inning.
LaRue County finished the regular season averaging one error every 2 1/3 innings, which allowed teams to score an average of 2.89 unearned runs a game.

  • Hawks claim victory over Hart...

The LaRue County Hawks Baseball Team opened District play Monday, May 23 with a rousing 14-2, five inning victory over the Hart County Raiders.  Slade Owens pitched five innings of one hit ball, giving up two runs but only one earned run.
