  • Lady Hawks attend UK's...

    Lady Hawk volleyball tryouts were held July 15-16 at LaRue County High School gymnasium. Coach Ben Schell took his players through some tough volleyball drills both days. Sixteen players were present on Friday morning participating in the workout. 

    Expectations are high for the team. One of six seniors, 17-year-old Angelina Marcum, has been playing volleyball since the fifth grade. 

  • LaRue All-Stars fall in state...

    The LaRue County 8- and 9-year-old All-Stars played in the state tournament over the weekend.

    LaRue County went 0-3 in its pool-play games at Chautauqua Park in Owensboro. The team fell 18-2 to Germantown on Thursday, 13-6 to Okolona on Friday and 14-4 to Fern Creek on Saturday.

    LaRue County was among 16 teams in the machine-pitch tournament at Crosby Park in Louisville.

  • DiStefano leaves LaRue to become...

    After 15 years teaching and coaching at LaRue County, Mielle DiStefano has accepted a guidance counselor’s position at Summer Shade Elementary School in Metcalfe County.

    “I felt it was time to do something different, and I’m excited about the opportunity,” said DiStefano, who during her tenure at LaRue served as assistant basketball coach (two years) and high school volleyball coach (five years).

    Volleyball tryouts

    The LaRue County High School volleyball team will hold tryouts 9-11 a.m. and 5-7 p.m. July 15-16. Attendance is mandatory both days. Any girl entering grades 8-12 may try out. A current KHSAA physical is required before tryout. Physical forms can be picked up in the LCHS office. For more information, contact Coach Ben Schell at 358-2210 or ben.schell@larue.kyschools.us.

  • Little league coaches learn CPR...

    New equipment was recently introduced at LaRue County Parks and Recreation and it could help to save lives in the future.

    The park’s addition is an Automated External Defibrillator or AED. This $1,500 machine, which was donated by Nolin RECC, is used as an aid during CPR and can help to restart a heart.

    According to Jerry McBride, paramedic and instructor for the American Heart Association, AEDs save lives because they can detect when a heart enters a deadly rhythm and then reset the heart by providing a “jolt of electricity” to return it to normal.

    No matter the situation, Donnie Davis told his players to always be patient at the plate.

    Through the first two innings Saturday night, the LaRue County 9-year-old All-Stars appeared anything but patient.

    That changed in the third inning.

    Leading 3-2, LaRue County broke the game open with 10 runs en route to a 15-5 win in five innings over the Elizabethtown Area Baseball Commission All-Stars in Game 3 of the best-of-three Cal Ripken District 7 Tournament at University Drive Park.

    LaRue County All-Star teams played last week in the Cal Ripken District Tournaments at Meade-Olin Park.

    In the opening 12-year-old game July 6, LaRue dropped to Meade County Green 10-0 in a mercy-rule loss.

    The following night, LaRue dropped to Meade County White 14-9 in the double-elimination tournament.

    Colby Skaggs went 3-for-4 with two homers and a double for LaRue County, while Chandler Lynn went 3-for-4 with a homer and Dalton Metcalfe had four singles.

    The annual Bluegrass State Games will be held on several dates: July 9-11, 16-18, 23-25 and July 30-Aug. 1.

    The Bluegrass State Games is a non-profit program to promote amateur athletics.

    Lady Hawks Basketball Camp

    LaRue County girls’ basketball will hold a camp for 1st-8th grade girls July 7-9. Camp fee is $30 per girl and includes a T-shirt and three days of instruction. The camp will run 10 a.m.-noon at LaRue County High School.
