  • New high school tennis coach...

Roger Pierce, who is helping Allison McDowell coach LaRue County High School’s boys’ and girls’ tennis teams this spring, hasn’t walked the traditional path to coaching that most coaches have trod.
“I played football, basketball and baseball in high school, but was never on a tennis court until a friend of mine introduced me to the sport while we were in the military,” the 62-year-old Elizabethtown resident said.
Later, while working for the state government in Hart County, he resumed the sport recreationally.

The third-seeded LaRue team fell 59-53 to the second-seeded Hart County Lady Raiders in the opening round of play.

Hart County led briefly in the first half, 3-2, but LaRue took charge and quickly gained a 7-point lead. Hart rallied, tying the game at 24-all at halftime.
