LaRue’s Lady Hawks softball team finished pre-spring-break play with two wins, improving their early season record to 5-2.

Coach Aaron Howell’s LaRue County squad is experienced with every player among the starters having at least one year of varsity play.

“We have a strong veteran group of players led by my three seniors – Peyton Gardner, Courtney Johnson, and Brigitte Skaggs,” said Howell, a math teacher at the high school. “Leadership is strength.”

  • CROSS COUNTRY: New season begins

With most athletes returning from last year’s boys’ track team, LaRue County coach Orion Tucker is looking for a strong showing from his squad this season.

Leading the charge is senior Adam Sandidge, clocking a personal best 4:32 mile to win at Grayson County March 28. It was the third win in the mile this season for the runner who placed fourth in cross country competition at state last fall.

He also finished first in the two-mile race in 10:07. He holds the school two-mile record (9:52) which he sat last year.

Courtney Johnson was locked in Thursday night against the Elizabethtown Lady Panthers.

The LaRue County senior third baseman hit a three-run home run and a two-run single as the visiting Lady Hawks held off Elizabethtown, 6-4.

Johnson homered in the first inning, crushing a pitch to left-center field, and then drove in two more runs in the sixth to provide LaRue County (5-2) with enough cushion.

  • BASEBALL: Hawks pound Caverna

The LaRue County Hawks got off to a slow start, but once they warmed up, the Caverna Colonels couldn’t stop them.

The Hawks collected 19 hits, including six for extra bases, on their way to a 20-1 pounding of the visiting Colonels on March 25 in an 18th District game.

Caverna took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before LaRue County tied it in the bottom half of the inning. The Hawks erupted for eight runs in the second and 11 more in the third.

  • STATE CHAMP: MADELINE MEREDITH

Madeline Meredith, the 9-year-old daughter of Andy and Whitney Meredith, won two state championships in the Kentucky Swimming Short Course March 14-16 in the 9/10 age division. She was first in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 31.01; first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 28.21; second in the 100-yard backstroke; and fourth in the 200 individual medley.

The Hawks fell to No. 9 Mercer County, 6-2 and beat Louisville Western, 29-0 in a round robin at Mercer County over the weekend.

  • SOFTBALL: Lady Hawks win 16-1

Two pitches cost Courtney Johnson two more RBIs Monday afternoon, but the LaRue County senior third baseman was more miffed about her perfect day at the plate coming to a premature end than she was about driving in more runs.
