  • Lady Hawks top Taylor but fall to Nelson

    The Lady Hawks ended a three-game losing streak Friday with a 55-30 win over Taylor County.
    Sophomore wing Ivy Brown had a double-double and freshman guard Alexis Brewer had a balanced night as the host Lady Hawks hammered the Lady Cardinals (6-16).
    LaRue held Taylor to single digits in three quarters.
    Brown had 26 points, 13 rebounds, three blocks, three steals and two assists, while Brewer added 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

  • Mat Hawks win 12th Regional Title in 14 years

    It was the 12th regional title in 14 years for the LaRue County Mat Hawks and the third in a row.
    Regional records fell and were tied on Saturday in Danville as LaRue’s grapplers won the Region 2 title by more than 70 points. They had eight regional champions which tied a regional record, went undefeated in their championship matches, which tied another regional record and had one Mat Hawk – senior Nick Paden – win his fifth consecutive regional championship tying another regional record.

  • Cheerleaders make it to UCA finals

    The LaRue County High School cheerleaders competed this weekend in the National High School Cheerleading Championship at the Walt Disney Resort in Orlando.

    The team finished 13th in the Medium Varsity Division Two.

    They were judged on tumbling, stunting, jumps and dance.

    Tara Wooden is the cheer squad's coach.

  • WRESTLING: Shawn Hull looks for state title

    Knowing this was his final season as a LaRue County wrestler, senior Shawn Hull wanted to put everything on the line.

    Hull increased his workout regimen and attended several wrestling camps over the summer to get better.

    Hull’s improved work ethic has led him to a 33-1 record – his only loss came in December’s Smoky Mountain Duals in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. – and the No. 1 ranking at 160 pounds by kentuckywrestling.com entering Saturday’s Region 2 Tournament in Danville.

  • BASKETBALL: Hawks defeat Nelson 59-49

     Junior guard Kelton Ford scored 23 points and senior guard Kyle Sheeran added 19 as the host Hawks (17-7) knocked off the Cardinals (6-17) Tuesday for their fourth win in six games.

    Nelson pulled within three points at halftime but the Hawks outscored them 15-7 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

    Ford also had seven assists and four steals, while Sheeran hit four 3-pointers and had three steals.

  • Girls basketball: NELSON 38, LARUE 33

     The host Lady Hawks blew a nine-point first-quarter lead as Nelson County's Lady Cardinals rallied to win their sixth straight Feb. 7.

    The Lady Cards took advantage of the early lead to win 38-33.

    LaRue County, which lost its third straight, led 12-3 after the first quarter but was held to single digits the final three periods.

    Sophomore wing Ivy Brown paced the Lady Hawks with 22 points, eight rebounds and three steals. She hit two-of-four 3-point shots. Sophomore center Alley Evans scored five points.

  • Hawk seniors complement strengths

    The three senior players on LaRue County High School’s basketball team complement each other’s strengths well, according to head coach Paul Childress.
    Where one stands out on defense, the others show strong skills in free throw shooting or searing the nets with three-pointers.
    Kyle Sheeran, averaging 18.3 points per game, is the long range sharpshooter, connecting on 38 percent of his trey attempts.
