  • SOFTBALL: Lady Hawks show the power of the underdog

Brigitte Skaggs hit her spots Tuesday night at Elizabethtown. Courtney Johnson just hit the ball.

Together, the LaRue County sophomores helped the surging Lady Hawks back to the .500 mark with a 5-2 win over the host Lady Panthers.

LaRue County (5-5), which has won 4-of-5, matched its second-best start through 10 games in the last eight seasons. But that didn't matter much last season as the Lady Hawks started off 3-7 before rallying to earn a berth in the 5th Region Tournament title game.

  • Lady Hawks track team begins season with small goals

Like the sage who said a 1,000-mile journey begins with a single step, Lady Hawks girls’ track coach Laura Kudrna is counting on her charges attaining small goals that will enable them to meet larger ones.
“Our goal for the season is to beat our previous time,” said the Hodgenville Elementary School fifth-grade teacher in her second year as coach. “I don’t care if it’s a 10th of a second off the previous time; every little bit helps and counts.”

  • Hawks prepare to multi-task as track season opens

Multi-tasking will be the major descriptor of this season’s Hawks boys track team under new coach Drew Simpson.
“The number of students we have on the team is our strength and weakness,” said Simpson, who substitute teaches for the LaRue County school system. “We have a small high school team and because of that all of my athletes have to compete in four events.”
Perhaps because of the few number of athletes, however, he has found a more personal team, one with heart and a lot of determination, he said.
