  • CROSS COUNTRY: Sandidge named to First Team All State

The accolades continue for Adam Sandidge, a junior cross country runner for the Hawks.

He has been named to the Class AA Boys’ All State First Team by the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association. The top seven finishers at State make first team.

After winning Region, Sandidge placed fifth at the state meet. He was named also to the Academic All-State Team.

He won the Jack Mitchell Invitational and Lincoln Railsplitter Run.

  • Mat Hawks finish 7th at Oldham Duals

Inexperience and injuries were the two parts of the formula that caused the LaRue County Mat Hawks to struggle on Saturday at the Oldham County dual tournament. The Hawks were 3-2 in duals and finished in seventh place.

“We have many kids in our line-up this year who need experience,” said Head Coach Gary Canter. “Where we have experienced kids in the lineup, we are solid.  Unfortunately on Saturday, a few of those experienced kids got injured and this caused us to struggle a bit as the day progressed.”

  • BASKETBALL: Hawks lose season opener

Playing without a starter is difficult enough, but when it’s the season opener against a quality team playing its third game, it becomes a monumental challenge.

The LaRue County Hawks found that out Saturday night.

The Hawks, who were already replacing three starters from last season, were without senior point guard Kelton Ford, who didn’t dress for the game. LaRue County coach Paul Childress said Ford should return next week.

  • WRESTLING: Mat Hawks' goal is to win Region

Head coach Gary Canter started the wrestling program at LaRue County High School in 1990.

At that time, the form of wrestling most people in LaRue County knew was the smackdowns – professionals on television.

“The biggest challenge I had the first year,” Canter once said, “was to convince the wrestlers that there were not any ropes or ring involved in real wrestling.”

  • BASKETBALL: Lady Hawks demolish Thomas Nelson

Junior guard/forward Ivy Brown neared a rare quadruple-double as the LaRue County Lady Hawks routed first-year program Thomas Nelson, 71-36 in both teams’ season openers Nov. 27.

It was the first-ever game for the Lady Generals.

The Generals’ home opener against one of the 5th Region’s top teams was a rough one, as the Hawks jumped out to a 30-7 lead after one quarter and cruised from there. LaRue County ran the lead to 51-15 at the half.

  • BASKETBALL: Hawks eye fifth straight district title

LaRue County High School’s boys varsity basketball team has captured the 18th District crown four years running, and with a veteran squad returning this season, the Hawks are a credible contender for a fifth title.

“We have nine to 10 kids that could contribute,” said Paul Childress who is entering his eighth season as the Hawks’ head coach. “Our point guard position is really strong; potentially we could have a good shooting team from the perimeter and we have decent size, so we should rebound the basketball.”
