  • WRESTLING: Mat Hawks' goal is to win Region

Head coach Gary Canter started the wrestling program at LaRue County High School in 1990.

At that time, the form of wrestling most people in LaRue County knew was the smackdowns – professionals on television.

“The biggest challenge I had the first year,” Canter once said, “was to convince the wrestlers that there were not any ropes or ring involved in real wrestling.”

  • BASKETBALL: Lady Hawks demolish Thomas Nelson

Junior guard/forward Ivy Brown neared a rare quadruple-double as the LaRue County Lady Hawks routed first-year program Thomas Nelson, 71-36 in both teams’ season openers Nov. 27.

It was the first-ever game for the Lady Generals.

The Generals’ home opener against one of the 5th Region’s top teams was a rough one, as the Hawks jumped out to a 30-7 lead after one quarter and cruised from there. LaRue County ran the lead to 51-15 at the half.

  • BASKETBALL: Hawks eye fifth straight district title

LaRue County High School’s boys varsity basketball team has captured the 18th District crown four years running, and with a veteran squad returning this season, the Hawks are a credible contender for a fifth title.

“We have nine to 10 kids that could contribute,” said Paul Childress who is entering his eighth season as the Hawks’ head coach. “Our point guard position is really strong; potentially we could have a good shooting team from the perimeter and we have decent size, so we should rebound the basketball.”

  • BASKETBALL: Hawks play in Corky Cox Classic Saturday

The Hawks will host the second annual Corky Cox Classic Basketball Tournament Saturday.

LaRue County plays Madisonville-North Hopkins at 7 p.m. in Hawk gym.

Green County plays Evangel Christian at 3:30 p.m.; John Hardin plays Henderson County at 5 p.m.

The tournament is named in honor of Cox, former head boys’ basketball coach.
