  • Basketball: Hawks defeat Breckinridge County 56-47

    The LaRue County Hawks defeated Breckinridge County 56-47 at home Dec. 6.

    The teams were tied 10-all at the end of the first period but the Hawks broke away in the second period with a score of 25-17 at halftime.

    Senior Kyle Sheeran had 22 points, hitting four of nine 3-pointers, 13 rebounds, two steals and eight assists.

    Junior Kelton Ford had 15 points and two assists; sophomore Kody Key had 10 points, hitting two of four 3-point attempts.

  • Allen resigns as tennis coach

    After a year at the net, Chris Allen has resigned as LaRue County High School’s boys and tennis coach.
    “I enjoyed coaching, but I took a full time job and my schedule conflicts so much with tennis that I couldn’t continue to coach,” said Allen, who is employed at Fort Knox Federal Credit Union.
    As head coach, the former Hawks star tennis player mentored the boys’ team to a successful season.

  • Mat Hawks unstoppable at Oldham Duals

    Dominate is defined as “to rule over, govern, control.” On Saturday, the LaRue County Mat Hawks dominated every opponent they faced and walked away from the Oldham County Super Duals with their fourth straight championship trophy.
    “I am not very easily impressed,” said head coach Gary Canter. “No team has ever impressed me more than this team on Saturday. I have never seen as a dominating performance as I witnessed from this team. “

  • Lady Hawks fall to Meade in season opener

    LaRue’s Lady Hawks lost their season opener against the host Meade County Lady Waves, 55-50.
    The Lady Hawks trailed by two points, 7-9, at the end of the first quarter. Meade outscored LaRue 9-18 in the second quarter.
    The teams combined for 49 fouls – and LaRue County coach Travis Wootton was given a technical foul late in the fourth quarter. The Lady Hawks struggled from the foul line, making just 20-of-41 shots.

  • Hawks defeat Australian team, 74-53

    The LaRue County High School Hawks won their opening game Saturday. They defeated the Australian Junior National Team 74-53 in the annual Corky Cox Classic.
    Senior Kyle Sheeran had a game-high 25 points, five rebounds and four steals. He was named Most Valuable Player for the game.
    “Kyle started off well for us, being aggressive to the basket and getting to the line as well as knocking down some threes,” said Coach Paul Childress.
    Childress said he was a “little nervous about how our guys would come out and play the first game.”

  • WRESTLING: Drew Newberry returns for senior year

    Ready or not, another high school wrestling season is upon us.

    The season officially began Saturday, but most teams don’t usually get started until the week after Thanksgiving break.

    Things kick into high gear this week as teams and individuals chase the ultimate prize: a state championship. It’s non-stop action from here until February, when the state tournament is held.

  • Wrestlers roll into action at Oldham Duals

    The Mat Hawks open the season Saturday at the Oldham County Super Duals. With high expectations and the focus of this team squarely on Feb. 17, the Hawks are ready to start their march towards Lexington.
    “We have a long season to go,” said long-time head coach Gary Canter. “Much can happen between now and February, but I do know that these guys are ready to wrestle someone else other than their team mates.”

  • Lady Hawks hope to repeat as district champs

    LaRue County’s defending 18th District Champion girls’ varsity basketball team is out to demonstrate that last year’s journey to the semifinals of the Fifth Region tournament and a 27-4 season record weren’t flukes.
    “I think the girls want to prove that last year was legit,” said Travis Wootton, in his seventh year at the Lady Hawks’ helm. “We have experience and size.”

  • Experienced guard play will be key in Hawks’ success

    Head Coach Paul Childress is looking for veteran guards to help LaRue County High School’s boys varsity basketball team, the Hawks, soar through the upcoming season.
    “I think our strengths will be experienced guard play,” the coach, in his seventh year as Hawks head coach, said. “Our guards have a lot of varsity experience and should bring a lot of leadership to this team and I will stack our guards up with any backcourt in the region.”

  • Senior wrestlers have impressive records

    Most of the present Mat Hawk seniors have been wrestling together since elementary school. They are Drew Newberry, Nick Paden, Shawn Hull, Bernard Ray, Taylor Albert, Dylan Sheldon, Eli Meredith, David Masure, Michael Geary and Ethan Hutchinson.
    To say this group has amassed some impressive statistics would be an understatement.
    The group has an overall individual record of 494-105 for an 82 percent winning percentage. That’s higher than any past graduating group of seniors. They have racked up 263 pins and averaged a pin every 2.28 matches.
