  • Hawks defeat Australian team, 74-53

    The LaRue County High School Hawks won their opening game Saturday. They defeated the Australian Junior National Team 74-53 in the annual Corky Cox Classic.
    Senior Kyle Sheeran had a game-high 25 points, five rebounds and four steals. He was named Most Valuable Player for the game.
    “Kyle started off well for us, being aggressive to the basket and getting to the line as well as knocking down some threes,” said Coach Paul Childress.
    Childress said he was a “little nervous about how our guys would come out and play the first game.”

  • WRESTLING: Drew Newberry returns for senior year

    Ready or not, another high school wrestling season is upon us.

    The season officially began Saturday, but most teams don’t usually get started until the week after Thanksgiving break.

    Things kick into high gear this week as teams and individuals chase the ultimate prize: a state championship. It’s non-stop action from here until February, when the state tournament is held.

  • Wrestlers roll into action at Oldham Duals

    The Mat Hawks open the season Saturday at the Oldham County Super Duals. With high expectations and the focus of this team squarely on Feb. 17, the Hawks are ready to start their march towards Lexington.
    “We have a long season to go,” said long-time head coach Gary Canter. “Much can happen between now and February, but I do know that these guys are ready to wrestle someone else other than their team mates.”

  • Lady Hawks hope to repeat as district champs

    LaRue County’s defending 18th District Champion girls’ varsity basketball team is out to demonstrate that last year’s journey to the semifinals of the Fifth Region tournament and a 27-4 season record weren’t flukes.
    “I think the girls want to prove that last year was legit,” said Travis Wootton, in his seventh year at the Lady Hawks’ helm. “We have experience and size.”

  • Experienced guard play will be key in Hawks’ success

    Head Coach Paul Childress is looking for veteran guards to help LaRue County High School’s boys varsity basketball team, the Hawks, soar through the upcoming season.
    “I think our strengths will be experienced guard play,” the coach, in his seventh year as Hawks head coach, said. “Our guards have a lot of varsity experience and should bring a lot of leadership to this team and I will stack our guards up with any backcourt in the region.”

  • Senior wrestlers have impressive records

    Most of the present Mat Hawk seniors have been wrestling together since elementary school. They are Drew Newberry, Nick Paden, Shawn Hull, Bernard Ray, Taylor Albert, Dylan Sheldon, Eli Meredith, David Masure, Michael Geary and Ethan Hutchinson.
    To say this group has amassed some impressive statistics would be an understatement.
    The group has an overall individual record of 494-105 for an 82 percent winning percentage. That’s higher than any past graduating group of seniors. They have racked up 263 pins and averaged a pin every 2.28 matches.

  • Pre-season: Mat Hawks ranked first in state

    The resume of the returning wrestlers on the present LaRue County High School wrestling team is impressive. This team has accomplished just about everything a team can accomplish in high school sports. But the team is unsatisfied and looking to add the last missing link to the long list of accomplishments it has achieved.
    The missing link?  A KHSAA state tournament championship.

  • Wrestling tournament faces change of venue

    The Kentucky High School Athletic Association has changed the venue of the wrestling state tournament.
    In a press release, the organization announced it is moving the wrestling state tournament to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington from the Frankfort Convention Center where it has been held since 1999.
    The length of the tournament is being reduced from three days to two. The change means wrestlers will only miss one day of school instead of two, something the Kentucky Department of Education had pushed to revise.

  • Blue &White Night set to start season

    In two weeks, the Hawks and Lady Hawks begin their basketball seasons.
    Fans will have a chance to see the players and help with fundraising Saturday, Nov. 19 during the annual Blue & White Night.
    A chili supper kicks off the event 4:30-6 p.m. in the LaRue County High School cafeteria. The meal includes chili, sandwich, dessert and drink for $5.
    Blue/White activities begin at 6 p.m. in the gym.
    All players on all teams – varsity, JV, freshman and middle school – and cheerleaders will be introduced.
