  • Lady Hawk seniors to be honored Feb. 10

    Statistics are sometimes misleading, or at least they don’t tell the whole story when it comes to describing the value that LaRue County High School’s senior basketball players have been to their team.
    Take Lady Hawks’ Shana Zajdel, for example.
    “Shana’s stats aren’t going to tell you what she has meant to our basketball team over the last four to five years,” said Lady Hawks’ coach Travis Wootton. “She has been one of the best defensive players in the region during this time.”

  • BASKETBALL: Lady Hawks beat Bethlehem

    LaRue County’s Lady Hawks defeated Bethlehem’s Banshees 59-31 Jan. 31 in varsity basketball action.
    LaRue was ahead 13-5 at the end of the first quarter and pulled ahead 19-17 at the half.
    Freshman guard Alexis Brewer had 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block as the host Lady Hawks improved their record to 14-7.
    Sophomore wing Ivy Brown added 18 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks for LaRue County, which has won 8-of-9.
    Sophomore forward Alley Evans had eight points and junior forward Alisha Durbin had 10 rebounds and six points.

  • BASKETBALL: Hawks lose to Green Wave

     The LaRue County High School Hawks fell Tuesday 71-59 to the Meade County Green Waves.

    The Hawks led 20-19 after the first quarter when both teams matched each other shot-for-shot.

    Meade County began pulling away in the second quarter, taking a 29-20 lead on a putback by senior center Wes Dowell.

    The Green Wave stretched their advantage to 43-29 early in the second, prompting Hawks coach Paul Childress to call for a timeout.

  • BASKETBALL: Double wins make Homecoming 2012 a success

     LaRue County teams had a heyday at Friday’s Homecoming with the Hawks coming away with a 60-54 win and the Lady Hawks with a 62-44 victory.

  • PHOTO: ECTC presents $1,100 check to Hawk Athletics

     LaRue County High School Principal Paul Mullins was presented a check for $1,100 from Elizabethtown Community and Technical College Friday. The funds were donated to Hawk Athletics. 

    At right is ECTC representative Amber Roberts. ECTC has placed a banner in the LCHS gym for recruiting purposes.

  • Lady Hawks fall to E’town

    LaRue County’s Lady Hawks had a rough first quarter Jan. 23 as they played the Elizabethtown Lady Panthers at Charlie Rawlings Memorial Stadium.
    They gave up seven turnovers and misfired on their first 12 shots from the field.
    “That’s what they do on their home floor,” LaRue’s Coach Travis Wootton said. “I think it was nerves and figuring things out. They’re one of the best defensive teams in the state. You have to be aggressive against them and I thought they were more aggressive than us in the first quarter.”

  • Mat Hawks take disappointing second at State Duals

    What happened? This is the question being asked over and over again to the LaRue County High School Mat Hawks after their second place finish at State Duals competition on Saturday in Lexington.
    “We were overconfident and Union County came in hungry and motivated and wanted it more than us,” said head coach Gary Canter. “We wrestled flat. We didn’t’ look good all day long. When you add in the fact we had a wrestler or two sick and injured, we had several obstacles to overcome right at the start of the day.”

  • Mat Hawks second at State Duals

    The LaRue County Hawks’ quest for another State Duals wrestling championship started strong Saturday, but fizzled late.

    After rolling through their three pool-play matches and then their semifinal, the Hawks suffered a 39-23 loss to Union County in the championship of the annual 16-team tournament at Lexington Henry Clay High School.

    The final match began at 138 pounds and LaRue County led 23-15 after the heavyweights before getting blanked the rest of the final.
