  • TENNIS: Tennis teams compete in Lincoln Heritage tourney

    Central Hardin, Elizabethtown, Fort Knox, John Hardin, LaRue County, Meade County and North Hardin’s boys’ and girls’ teams competed in the Lincoln Heritage Conference tournament last week at University Drive Park tennis courts in Elizabethtown.
    The Elizabethtown High School teams won.

  • BASEBALL: Hawks defeat Nelson, Green, John Hardin

    The Hawks won three games last week, overpowering Nelson County 7-1 on April 17 and edging Green County  (5-4) April 19 and John Hardin (5-4) April 20.
    NELSON COUNTY
    Senior Slade Owens had two doubles, three RBIs and scored twice to lead the homestanding Hawks past 5th Region foe Nelson County.
    Senior Wesley Kessinger, who got the win, helped himself out with an RBI double. He gave up three hits and struck out two in five innings.

  • SOFTBALL: Lady Hawks win 3-of-4

    The Lady Hawks won Monday and had two wins and a loss last week.
    The team defeated Hart County 13-4 on April 17 and Caverna 9-0 on April 19 before falling to East Robertson, Tenn., in four innings April 20 in the Greenwood Border Battle. Monday, they defeated Caverna 5-1.
    HART COUNTY
    Sophomore Brigitte Skaggs had three hits and two RBIs and sophomore Courtney Johnson was a homer short of the cycle as the visiting Lady Hawks (7-13 overall, 1-2 18th District) routed district foe Hart County.

  • BASEBALL: Hawks continue winning ways

    Junior Cole Hughes threw a two-hitter to lead the LaRue County Hawks to a 3-1 win over host Fort Walton Beach (Fla.) on Wednesday in the Florida Beach Bash.
    Hughes (4-0) struck out eight while allowing one unearned run, two walks and two singles.
    “It was a great outing,” said LaRue County coach Chris Price. “He’s been that solid all year; he just hasn’t thrown against a very good team until tonight. It was good to see.”
    The Hawks (10-3) scored all their runs in the top of the second on two wild pitches and a squeeze play.

  • BASEBALL: Hawks defeat Caldwell at Bash

    LARUE COUNTY 4, CALDWELL COUNTY 1. With his team down 1-0, senior Jesse Johnson hit a two-out, two-run triple in the Hawks’ four-run sixth inning to propel LaRue County (9-3) over the Tigers in the Florida Beach Bash at Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
    Junior Cole Hughes tacked on a two-run single as the Hawks rebounded from a loss to No. 3 Louisville Eastern on Sunday.
    “It was a good win, (especially) to be behind that long,” said LaRue County coach Chris Price. “It was nice to see our kids fight back in the sixth.”

  • BASEBALL: Hawks defeat Bardstown, Marion

    The LaRue County Hawks rallied from a 3-1 deficit to defeat Bardstown Bethlehem at home April 3.
    The Eagles scored in the first inning after Jacob Browning singled, stole second and reached home on an error.
    Hawk senior Kyle Sheeran tied the game in the bottom of the first inning after hitting a single and advancing to third on senior Jesse Johnson’s single.
    The Eagles scored twice in the second inning and held the Hawks scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning.

  • SOFTBALL: Ladies hope for success at Beach Bash

    Three errors over the first eight innings didn’t hurt but two errors in the top of the ninth doomed the host Lady Hawks against the Lady Knights of Marion County. LaRue fell 2-0 in the April 3 game.
    LaRue County wasted an 11-strikeout night by sophomore Brigitte Skaggs, who allowed six hits, two walks and hit one batter in 8 2/3 innings.
    Sophomore Peyton Gardner went 2-for-4 while senior Brittany Enlow, Brigitte Skaggs and junior Kayla Skaggs each had one hit. Sophomore Courtney Johnson and eighth-grader Mallory Skaggs both stole a base.

  • Paden named Wrestler of the Year

    As a kid, Nick Paden set the goal of wrestling under the lights in the state tournament. He had grown up watching former LaRue County standouts like Todd Allen, Scott and Andrew Cooper, Jason Detre, Ozzy Parker and Darwin Perez getting that chance and wanted to experience it for himself.

    Though the senior 120-pounder came up short in his quest to add his name to the list of LaRue County state champions, Paden was able to cross an achievement off his list.
