  • BASKETBALL: Ivy Brown signs with Western

Then-Western Kentucky University coach Mary Taylor Cowles was one of the first NCAA Division-I coaches to come calling for LaRue County’s Ivy Brown.

When WKU fired Cowles in March – during Brown’s junior season with the Lady Hawks – Brown wondered what would happen.

It didn’t take her long to find out. Just two weeks later, Michelle Clark-Heard, a former University of Louisville assistant and a former Lady Topper standout, was named WKU’s coach.

And not soon after, Brown was back in contact with WKU.

  • SOCCER: Goalkeeper Mullins shines as first-year player

LaRue County High School goalkeeper Sierra Mullins, in her first year playing the sport, recorded six shutouts and more than 125 saves in a season that saw the Lady Hawks win their first-ever district title and finish with a 15-3-2 record.

  • VOLLEYBALL: Brown, Evans honored

With her busy basketball schedule this summer, LaRue County senior middle hitter Ivy Brown couldn’t devote as much time to volleyball as she would have liked.

That’s why when the volleyball season began this fall, she put basketball on the backburner and focused all her energy into volleyball.

That focus paid off Friday as she was named to the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association Class 2-A All-State first team, 1-of-5 area players to be recognized.

  • FOOTBALL: Painful season ends for Hawks

Facing the state’s top-ranked team to open the Class 3-A playoffs proved to be too much of an uphill battle for the LaRue County Hawks.

Wayne County cruised past the winless Hawks, 54-7, at Jewell Field.

“They’re legit. They’re everything everyone’s heard about,” said Hawks coach Josh Jaggers. “That’s what successful teams look like – numbers, physicality, just everything. They beat up on us pretty good.”

The Cardinals built a 40-0 halftime lead.

  • CROSS COUNTRY: Sandidge takes fourth at State

In a typical race, LaRue County senior Adam Sandidge usually kicks things into another gear after the first mile.

That’s when he gets comfortable and keeps a steady pace, but Saturday wasn’t a typical race for him.

Chest and leg pain prevented him from taking the intensity up a few notches, but Sandidge wasn’t going to let that keep him from another top-five finish at the KHSAA State Cross Country Championships.

  • FOOTBALL: Hawks fall to Campbellsville

The Hawks were handed their 10th loss of the season Friday, 34-7, by the Campbellsville Eagles.

It’s the first winless regular season in at least 23 years.

In a season marred by injuries and players leaving the team, everything seemed to catch up to the Hawks against the Eagles (3-7).

LaRue County fumbled the ball three times, turned the ball over on downs twice, had a potential touchdown pass intercepted in the end zone and had a fake punt snuffed out in the fourth quarter.
