  • BASKETBALL: Lady Hawks fall in tournament to Boyle

    The LaRue County Lady Hawks got off to a rough start Friday afternoon and were never able to recover.

    The Lady Hawks turned the ball over on their first seven possessions before senior Alyson Yingling made two free throws. LaRue County’s first field goal didn’t come until 1:32 left in the first quarter after seven more turnovers.

    The results was a double-digit deficit, which the Lady Hawks could never dig out of in a 66-43 loss to the Boyle County Lady Rebels in the Bluegrass Cellular Classic at Central Hardin.

  • Hawks win own tournament

    Micah Wiseman came through in the clutch for the LaRue County Hawks.

    The senior guard drilled the game-winning 3-pointer as time expired to give the host Hawks a 60-57 win over Bardstown Bethlehem in the National Guard Holiday Classic championship game.

    Wiseman hit 5-of-7 from the arc and scored 23 for LaRue County (6-5), which won its own tournament for the fifth straight year.

    Senior forward Caleb Sheffer chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore guard Cameron Dawson chipped in with 10 points, three assists and two steals.

  • BASKETBALL: LaRue downs Crittenden in Classic

    LARUE COUNTY 57, CRITTENDEN COUNTY 46. Senior forward Caleb Sheffer had 19 points, six steals, four rebounds and three assists to lead the Hawks (5-5) back into the championship of their own National Guard Holiday Classic for the eighth straight season.

    Sophomore guard Cameron Dawson added 16 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals for LaRue County, which shot 47.6 percent (20-of-42) from the field.

    Senior guard Micah Wiseman and freshman guard Bryson Cobb each scored nine.

  • Lady Hawks downed at the buzzer

    Clinging to a 44-43 lead with 15 seconds left, the Lady Hawks (6-6) missed the front end of a one-and-one and Franklin-Simpson hit a 3 at the buzzer to win it in the Farmers National Bank Holiday Classic at South Warren. The game determined fifth-place in the tournament which ended Monday.

    The game was 8-all at the end of the first quarter and the Lady Hawks had a three-point lead at the end of the half.

  • Childress stands alone

    LARUE COUNTY 72, MENIFEE COUNTY 45. Senior guard Micah Wiseman and senior forward Caleb Sheffer combined for 40 points Monday, leading the host Hawks (4-5) past Menifee County in the National Guard Holiday Classic quarterfinals, held in LaRue County.

    Wiseman led LaRue County with 21 points and four steals, while Sheffer added 19 points, eight rebounds and six steals.

    Sophomore guard Cameron Dawson scored nine for the Hawks, who scored 45 points in the second half to pull away.

  • Engstrand steps down as Green County coach

    Chris Engstrand, head football coach at Green County High School, resigned his position last week. The Greensburg Record-Herald reported that Engstrand met with his players and staff before making the announcement.

    The resignation comes after the Dragons finished 2014 with a disappointing 2-10 record and losing six of their final games. But the second-year coach didn’t have much to work with, after seeing 29 total injuries and 10 that were season-ending.

    Fourteen players scored and the Hawks shot a blistering 67 percent from the field (30-of-45) as they cruised past Livingston Central, 77-44, Dec. 22 in the Beltline Electric Christmas Tournament at McCracken County.

    Senior guard Micah Wiseman scored 13, while junior guard Dalton Metcalf and freshman guard Kane Harris each had 10.

    Sophomore guard Cameron Dawson and freshman guard Bryson Cobb each scored eight for LaRue County, which led 46-19 at the half.

    Fourteen players scored and the Hawks shot a blistering 67 percent from the field (30-of-45) as they cruised past Livingston Central, 77-44, Dec. 22 in the Beltline Electric Christmas Tournament at McCracken County.

  • LaRue falls to North Hardin

    LaRue County’s Lady Hawks fell Dec. 16 to North Hardin’s Lady Trojans, 64-48.

    North maintained the lead throughout the game.

    Freshman guard Presley Brown, who led the Lady Hawks with 17 points, knocked down a 3-pointer before she found senior forward Alyson Yingling for a basket to cut North Hardin’s lead to 31-25 midway through the second quarter.

    That was as close as LaRue County would get, though.
