LaRue County will send 10 wrestlers to the KHSAA State Wrestling Tournament next weekend. The Mat Hawks earned their 13 Region 2 victory with 221 points. Central Hardin was second with 200 points.

The tournament was held at John Hardin Friday and Saturday. Six Mat Hawks are Region champions –  Kyle Edlin (120 pounds); Dylan West (132); Raymundo Perez (138); B.J. Carman (182); Jared Whitlock (160); and Caleb Canter (170).

Runners-up: Spencer Hines (145); and Tony Couch (195).

Third: Tanner Mouser (126)

Fourth: Dawson Bingham (106)

 Sophomore guard Alexis Brewer scored 23 points and junior guard Ivy Brown added a double-double Feb. 5 as the visiting Lady Hawks knocked off Nelson County – one of the top teams in the 5th Region.

The Lady Hawks won, 58-55, despite a 32-26 deficit at halftime.

“We did a good job of playing from behind and not panicking,” said Coach Travis Wootton. “We have played a tough schedule so we were prepared for this game. I think it was their first home loss this year. It was a good bounce back game for us.”

 The Lady Hawks continued their winning streak Jan. 31 with a 60-18 trouncing of Bardstown Bethlehem.

 Since 1998, the LaRue County Mat Hawks have won 12 regional championships.

Head coach Gary Canter, who is facing his final regional tournament, said the championship is up for grabs between several teams.

“Central Hardin, John Hardin, North Hardin and us are all about even when you look at tournament teams,” said Canter. “Any one of these teams could win the regional tournament. I am very sure you can’t say any one team is favored.”
