Seniors Courtney Johnson and Brigitte combined to go 5-for-7 with four doubles and four RBIs as the visiting Lady Hawks knocked off their 5th Region foe, snapping the Banshee’s seven-game winning streak.

Skaggs was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs, while Johnson went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. She struck out four while allowing four hits, two walks and one unearned run in a complete game.

  • Regional Tennis Tournament has few surprises

The opening round of the 5th Region Tennis Tournament on Friday at the Freeman Lake Tennis Complex didn’t produce any major upsets, but that doesn’t mean it lacked drama or intrigue.

Seven matches were tied after two sets, going to a super tiebreaker instead of a third set, and all but two of those involved an area player.

Central Hardin sophomores Hadley Handel and Chloe Sheeran dropped the first to the North Hardin duo of freshman Mary Kate Dennis and sixth-grader Addison Sutton, but managed to pull even by winning a second set tiebreaker.

  • Freshman Lady Hawks raising expectations

With each passing season at the high school level of competition a majority of the focus gets put on the varsity programs through newspapers, social media and word of mouth.

The LaRue County Lady Hawks Freshman Softball Team has certainly raised some eyebrows over the last few weeks while posting an 18-7 record including big wins over Central Hardin, Elizabethtown, Fairdale, Bullitt Central and North Hardin. This is an impressive turnaround from a 9-19 season last year.

  • Spring athletes prepare for season-ending tournaments

The LaRue County High School Sports Programs are seeking improvement as the last few weeks of the regular season conclude and post season play begins.

Ivy Brown was on a bus Thursday en route to New York for the LaRue County senior trip when she picked up her phone and checked Twitter.

It wasn’t exactly in the most official manner, but it caught her eye when she read she had been named the USAToday/American Family Insurance Kentucky Girls’ Basketball State Player of the Year.

Brown is the second area senior to earn a State Player of the Year award this school year from USA Today. John Hardin lineman Matt Elam, a Kentucky signee, earned the football honor.
