 Senator James Harlan of Iowa, whose daughter later married President Lincoln's son Robert, introduced this Resolution in the Senate on March 2, 1863. The Resolution asked President Lincoln to proclaim a national day of prayer and fasting. The Resolution was adopted on March 3, and signed by Lincoln on March 30, one month before the fast day was observed.

 Commonwealth residents can help better protect themselves and their loved ones from tornadoes and storms by having weather radios in their home.

Weather radios broadcast warnings whenever potentially life-threatening weather events are occurring or imminent. The National Weather Service broadcasts these warnings 24 hours a day.

 Kudos to our LaRue County High School Cheerleaders for going where no local squad has gone before: The National High School Cheerleading Championship. They earned the right to attend the competition and raised funds for the trip to Florida where they challenged top squads from across the nation. They took 13th. But more importantly, they’re proving that hard work, attitude and an ability to look great while doing some amazing gymnastic stunts can pay off big dividends. 

There are about a dozen dead skunks on the side of the road between Hodgenville and Buffalo. What’s going on? Will they be tested for rabies?

Skunks are suffering from rabies of love.
According to the University of Kentucky Extension Service, February is mating season for skunks, so they are on the move more than usual.
Skunks are nocturnal, nomadic and solitary, except during mating season when the males apparently lose all sense of timing and direction and blunder into the roadway.
If your vehicle gets skunked, we are sorry.

The mystery of the old photo continues.

Where was it taken?

The photographer said it was taken between 1975 and 1977 in LaRue County – a statement that brought some confusion because LaRue County has been dry (no alcohol sales) for decades and the store sign clearly says “beer.” The photo is being displayed in an exhibit at the Frazier History Museum.

It’s agreed that it wasn’t taken in LaRue County – but several people believe it to have been taken on the LaRue/Nelson line, facing toward LaRue County.

This time of year – deer hunting season, that is – reminds me of my Uncle Hardin, my dad’s older brother.
Only those who knew James Harding Powell as a child called him “Hardin.’” When he became an adult and moved on to bigger things, he was known as “Jim.”

My husband and I took our daughter to the circus.

Sounds simple, right? Wrong. From the moment we pulled into the fairgrounds she had her mind made up. She cared nothing about the circus and everything about the pony rides offered outside.

Screaming at the top of her lungs in excitement she was practically begging to ride the animals.
