  • Soil test results may be lower...

    Soil samples taken during dry falls tend to result in soil pH and soil test potassium being unusually low. This results in recommendations that overestimate lime and K (potassium) fertilizer that may be needed.

    Recently, University of Kentucky soil test labs began a new test for soil pH to solve the problem occurring with lower pH levels in soil samples taken in dry falls.

    Lincoln Trail Youth Leadership Council Inc. has announced the Youth Leaders of the Year 2010-2011. Finalists were selected on their overall merits of their biographical sketch and leadership essay. 

    Finalists include Shelby Laine Rogers, Lyndsay June Whitlock, Emily Mary Alice Dewitt and Valerie Ann Whitlock of LaRue County High School. These students took part in personal interviews with Lincoln Trail Youth Salute’s panel of judges to determine the two Youth Leaders.

    The LaRue County High School softball team will have a golf scramble 1 p.m. Oct. 30 at LaRue County Country Club. Registration begins at noon.     The LaRue County High School Class of 1985 will hold a 25-year class reunion 6 p.m.-midnight Oct. 23 at Sportsman Lake in Hodgenville. The cost is $18 per person and includes dinner.     Project Graduation fundraiser

    The LaRue County High School Drama Club is performing Steel Magnolias 7 p.m. Oct. 15 and 16 in the LCHS auditorium. Proceeds from “Dinner and a Play” will benefit Project Graduation and the Drama Club. Barbecue, coleslaw, baked beans and a drink will be served at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $13 and can be purchased from Deborah Whitlock at 358-9924, LaRue Insurance, Inc. at 358-3101 or Katy Cecil and Drama Club members.

    Navigating the state’s child support system can be complicated.

    But thanks to one-time federal funding, new technology is being developed that may simplify the process for custodial and non-custodial parents alike.

    Lesa Read-Weikel, supervisor, Division of Child Support in the LaRue County Attorney’s office, is serving as a subject matter expert on the exchange portal specialization team. 

  • Becky Hellman part of Homecoming...

    Becky Hellman, a senior psychology major/sociology minor from Hodgenville, will be escorted by Triston Mullins of South Shore in the Georgetown College Homecoming Court during halftime ceremonies of the Tigers football game against Pikeville College Oct. 16. The daughter of Tony and Karen Hellman, Becky played soccer and tennis for LaRue County High School, was a member of class committee each year and was voted Most Dependable her senior year, 2007. At Georgetown, she’s the Panhellenic President and a member of Phi Mu Fraternity. ­

    Alternative transportation technologies will be showcased at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College’s automotive/diesel department as part of an innovative national event. 

    Although Odyssey Day has been celebrated every other year since 2002, this is the first year that ECTC has had the opportunity to participate as a host site.

  • Adams takes first place in State...

    Jayne Judd Adams of Upton won first place in the Fleischmann’s Yeast Bake for the Cure at the Kentucky State Fair for her Blueberry Bliss dessert dish.

    This is the second time Adams has won top honors in the contest. A 2007 win with her Orange Nirvana recipe resulted in her advancing to the nationals and winning the grand prize of $1,000.

    Calling all hummingbirds: Meet the...

    You’ve perhaps heard of the Bird Man of Alcatraz. Dotty Coleman is fast becoming the Bird Woman of Ball Hollow.

    Coleman, who lives off Pleasant Church Road, is into hummingbirds – really into them.

    “Most nights in the early evening, I’ll see 25 of them or so at one time, but that isn’t even the busiest time,” she said.

    She has 10 feeders from which the birds sip the homemade nectar of one part sugar to three parts water.

    Cowboy mounted shooting club...

    Clay Greenwell regularly watches “Gunsmoke” and “Bonanza.” The 10-year-old New Haven boy has always had an interest in guns and horses, and he recently found a way to combine the two into a challenging hobby.

    Greenwell will be a member of the still-forming Kentucky Cowboy Mounted Shooters, which became a club   Sept. 8 at the Nelson County Public Library.
