  • Flanders records 116 head of Angus

    Kelly Flanders, Buffalo, tied for ninth largest in registering the most Angus beef cattle in Kentucky.

    He recorded 116 head of Angus with the American Angus Association during fiscal year 2010, which ended Sept. 30, according to Bryce Schumann, CEO of the American Angus Association.

    Angus breeders across the nation in 2010 registered 297,087 head of Angus cattle.

  • Time for wheat planting decision

    Corn, soybean and wheat prices have all done well this summer. As a result, grain farmers may be considering planting more wheat this fall and follow with a soybean double crop. However, double crop soybeans are more susceptible to summer drought, and typically yield about 20 percent less than full season soybeans.     Cloverbuds to meet

    The 4-H Cloverbuds will meet 3:15-4:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Extension Service office. Participants will get to decorate pumpkins. Cloverbud activities are open to LaRue County Youth ages 5 to 8 or in kindergarten through third grade. Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month.

  • Prepare for fall wildfire season

    The Kentucky Division of Forestry is preparing for an active wildfire season this year as low humidity, low fuel moisture and increased fuel loads ­could cause high to very high burning conditions.   

  • Soil test results may be lower...

    Soil samples taken during dry falls tend to result in soil pH and soil test potassium being unusually low. This results in recommendations that overestimate lime and K (potassium) fertilizer that may be needed.

    Recently, University of Kentucky soil test labs began a new test for soil pH to solve the problem occurring with lower pH levels in soil samples taken in dry falls.

    Lincoln Trail Youth Leadership Council Inc. has announced the Youth Leaders of the Year 2010-2011. Finalists were selected on their overall merits of their biographical sketch and leadership essay. 

    Finalists include Shelby Laine Rogers, Lyndsay June Whitlock, Emily Mary Alice Dewitt and Valerie Ann Whitlock of LaRue County High School. These students took part in personal interviews with Lincoln Trail Youth Salute’s panel of judges to determine the two Youth Leaders.

    The LaRue County High School softball team will have a golf scramble 1 p.m. Oct. 30 at LaRue County Country Club. Registration begins at noon.     Project Graduation fundraiser

    The LaRue County High School Drama Club is performing Steel Magnolias 7 p.m. Oct. 15 and 16 in the LCHS auditorium. Proceeds from “Dinner and a Play” will benefit Project Graduation and the Drama Club. Barbecue, coleslaw, baked beans and a drink will be served at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $13 and can be purchased from Deborah Whitlock at 358-9924, LaRue Insurance, Inc. at 358-3101 or Katy Cecil and Drama Club members.

  • Read-Weikel named to committee to...

    Navigating the state’s child support system can be complicated.

    But thanks to one-time federal funding, new technology is being developed that may simplify the process for custodial and non-custodial parents alike.

    Lesa Read-Weikel, supervisor, Division of Child Support in the LaRue County Attorney’s office, is serving as a subject matter expert on the exchange portal specialization team. 

  • Becky Hellman part of Homecoming...

    Becky Hellman, a senior psychology major/sociology minor from Hodgenville, will be escorted by Triston Mullins of South Shore in the Georgetown College Homecoming Court during halftime ceremonies of the Tigers football game against Pikeville College Oct. 16. The daughter of Tony and Karen Hellman, Becky played soccer and tennis for LaRue County High School, was a member of class committee each year and was voted Most Dependable her senior year, 2007. At Georgetown, she’s the Panhellenic President and a member of Phi Mu Fraternity. ­

    Alternative transportation technologies will be showcased at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College’s automotive/diesel department as part of an innovative national event. 

    Although Odyssey Day has been celebrated every other year since 2002, this is the first year that ECTC has had the opportunity to participate as a host site.
