It is now time for youth ages 9-14 to register to attend 4-H Camp this summer. The camp is June 29-July 2 at Lake Cumberland.

We also need adults and teens to attend camp, so consider attending camp with your child or grandchild. Adults attend for free because they serve as chaperones. Selected 4-H Teen Leaders pay $75 instead of the full camp fee.

Grain production calendars have been developed to help producers prioritize and schedule work events on the farm. However, weather events and equipment breakdowns rarely follow an organized schedule. This calendar should be treated as a starting point and as a tool to help prioritize some of the practices involved in grain production.

The 4-H Speech and Demonstration contests will be held 6:30 p.m. April 27 at the Extension Service office.

Both contests provide participants with the opportunity to develop their communication skills. Participants must register by calling 358-3401.

4-Hers may participate in both the speech and demonstration categories, if they wish.

Speech contest rules

The 4-H Talent Show was held at the LaRue County High School Auditorium on March 27. 4-H members showcased their talents. The participants were divided into two age divisions: 9-13 year olds and 14-18 year olds. 

The Sunrise Volunteers will meet 6:30 p.m. April 28 in Sunrise Manor’s activity room for a semi-annual meeting. Nominations and election will be held for president, first vice president and second vice president. As a dinner will be served, volunteers should sign the reservation list located by the sign-in sheet in the lobby or contact Kathy Cooper at 358-3103.

The next executive board meeting will be 3 p.m. May 4 at the nursing home.

The LaRue County Conservation District will accept requests for cost share funding under the Kentucky Soil Erosion and Water Quality Cost Share Program through April 15.

George C. “Clint” Merritt, manager of Southern States Hardin Cooperative – Hodgenville Branch, has won the President’s Operating Excellence Award. Only 40 co-op managers from Southern States 23-state territory earned this award, which Merritt has won two times since the program’s inception in 1987.

To Mike and Angela Rock, the birth of triplets in October 2007 was a blessing – and a challenge.

After Angela gave birth to sons Gabriel, Kagan and Devin, she intended to return to work as soon as possible. Day care, however, proved to be an insurmountable challenge.

“If I’d gone back to work,” Angela said, “all I’d have been working for was day care and gas. It would be like paying to be gone. I’d rather be with them.”

Beverly Heath gave a presentation on “Outhouses of the Past” at the last meeting of Ancestral Trails Historical Society.

The next meeting will have Katherine Johnson of the Louisville Archivist for Manuscript Collections at the University of Louisville.

Plans are under way for the upcoming Genealogy and History Book Fair sponsored by Ancestral Trails on April 18 at Pritchard Community Center in Elizabethtown. Also there will be two workshops presented by Brandon Slone on War of 1812 and Kandie Adkinson on Land Warrants and Land Grants on line.
