The 2009 LaRue County Fair will be July 23-Aug. 1 and county residents are encouraged to enter crop and livestock exhibits. Agriculture remains a strong part of our 102nd LaRue County Community Fair.

Being 90 years old, World War II Army veteran Guthrie Catlin was beginning to doubt if he ever would be able to visit the memorial built in Washington, D.C., to honor him and his band of brothers.

However, the Illinois native who lived in the Levelwoods section of LaRue County for more than 30 years made the trip May 16, thanks to the Honor Flight network.

Gov. Steve Beshear recently reappointed Campbellsville urologist James R. Angel to a second consecutive four-year term on the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission. Angel also served on the commission 1989-1993.

Angel represents the Fourth District on the commission, which includes Adair, Barren, Cumberland, Edmonson, Grayson, Green, Hardin, Hart, LaRue, Marion, Metcalfe, Monroe, Nelson, Taylor and Washington counties.

Visitors to the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Park will be greeted by a new face this week.

Douglas Richardson, whose permanent position is at the Johnstown Flood National Memorial in Pennsylvania, will be filling in for recently retired Sandy Brue, chief of interpretation and resource management at the park.

Richardson said he is “absolutely thrilled” to be working at the park for a few months during the search for a permanent replacement for Brue.

LaRue County is home to two of the 92 markets across the state that are members of the 2009 Kentucky Farm Bureau Certified Roadside Farm Market Program. They are Hinton’s Orchard and Farm Market and Lee’s Garden Center.   

Hinton’s sells fruits, vegetables and homemade crafts on Campbellsville Road. They also offer hay rides, children’s play areas, corn maze and school and group tours.

Pat Helm, who retired June 1 as LaRue County’s director of emergency medical services, vividly recalls his first life-saving resuscitation.

“I just happened to be driving through the square in Hodgenville when a call on dispatch said that a person was unresponsive at the pool hall,” Helm said. 

Within seconds, he entered the billiard parlor to find a man lying unconscious on the floor – no breathing, no heartbeat, in full cardiac arrest.

A new Sunrise

A groundbreaking ceremony for a new nursing home facility will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sunrise Manor Nursing Home on Phillips Lane.

Campbellsville University information meeting

Kentucky livestock producers are fortunate to have two veterinary labs that support the animal industry with diagnostic medical testing services. The labs are the Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center at the University of Kentucky in Lexington and Murray State University’s Breathitt Veterinary Center in Hopkinsville. Their goal is to provide services to improve the health of livestock in the state. Horses, as well as cattle are the main emphasis, but they do work with all livestock.
