  • Elizabethtown resident Jo Nell Lee admits she needs a push to visit her doctor regularly.

    Lee rose early Wednesday to climb into Hardin Memorial Hospital’s Wellness on Wheels mobile health unit at Kroger on Dolphin Drive in Elizabethtown. The visit served as a motivational self-starter.

    The mobile medical unit has become a staple in Hardin and surrounding counties, including LaRue, pulling into local parking lots and setting up shop on the spot from 7 a.m. to noon.

  • The 4-H Teen Leadership Academy soon will start with its third class of participants. The leadership program is a combined program with teens from LaRue, Hardin, Meade, Breckinridge and Grayson counties. Up to five participants from each county will be selected based on their applications.

  • Hodgenville resident Ruby Heady’s Memorial Day weekend visit to her father’s grave in France finally healed a wound that had agonized her for 66 years.

    Heady, who lives in Hutcherson Heights with her husband Bobby, was only 7 years old when word came that her dad, Roy McDowell, had died of injuries suffered while fighting the Germans in occupied France.

  • There was a lot of white clover almost everywhere this year (at least before the dry spell). Many pasture fields and lawns had extensive white clover where little or none was seeded. The excess clover in pastures has raised concerns about bloat and some farmers experienced cattle death losses due to bloat.

    So what factors have contributed to the abundance of clover?

  • A dozen women gathered last week to make a difference with simple needle and thread.

    During Open Sew Days at the LaRue County Extension Service office last Monday, women of various ages and from different walks of life came together to take part in a project that would benefit women undergoing cancer treatment. These volunteers used brightly colored fabrics to make comfort caps and heart-shaped pillows.

  • Twenty-five students with varying degrees of skill spent two days with nationally known basket maker Martha Wetherbee last week. They came away with greater knowledge of the craft and a one-of-a-kind souvenir of the Lincoln Bicentennial.

    Wetherbee and husband Alan Litchfield returned to Hodgenville Friday for the second workshop in a series of four that provided materials and instruction in creation of the “Lincoln Bicentennial Penny Basket” set.

  • Senior Citizens music

    The Senior Citizens Center, 112 N. Walters Ave., Hodgenville, has music with the Charlie Riggs Band at 6:30 p.m. every Saturday. Musicians and singers are welcome. For more information, call 358-4311 or e-mail viola47@windstream.net.

  • Rabbit Show

    The LaRue County 4-H Rabbit Show will be July 31 at the LaRue County Fairgrounds immediately following the 8 a.m. Fun Show. Pre-registration is required. Forms are available from the Extension Service office and are due by July 21 or may be submitted at the 4-H Rabbit Club meeting 4 p.m. July 22.

     

    Pick up entries

    4-H County Fair entries may be picked up from Floral Hall any time between 10 a.m. and noon July 31.

     

    State Fair Rabbit Show

  • Agricultural producers in LaRue County who have suffered damage as a result of flooding may request cost share assistance to rehabilitate damaged farmlands. This Emergency Conservation Program is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farm Service Agency, and provides cost-share assistance if disaster damage is so severe that recovery without federal assistance is unlikely.

  • The LaRue County Fair is an excellent opportunity for youth to showcase their talents. Numerous 4-H classes are offered including arts and crafts, photography, foods, houseplants, vegetables, crops, electric, woodworking, entomology, honey, forestry, geology, sewing, knitting, crocheting, breads, dairy foods, food preservation and home environment. 

    A complete list of 4-H classes is included in the fair catalog. Stop by the Extension Service office if you need a copy of the catalog or if you have questions about entry requirements. 

  • Livestock entries are generally open to all, but must meet several requirements including Exhibition Health Requirements with a health certificate and ownership by certain date. Some livestock show classes require an entry fee; some do not.

    Livestock exhibition begins Thursday, July 22, with the Pleasure and Open Fun Horse Show. A variety of horse shows and events continue on Friday and Saturday, and Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings of the next week.

  • Reception for librarian

    LaRue County Librarian Niki Carter is leaving her position to enter the mission field. A reception in her honor will be held 4-6 p.m. July 27 at the library. For more information, call 766-8057.

    Child care training

    Community Coordinated Child Care will have a workshop “How to start a family child care home” 4-5:30 p.m. Aug. 17 at 4-C office, 54 First St., Elizabethtown. Pre-registration is required by calling Alice Brewer at 360-9911.

  • Food pantry at Church of Christ

    The food pantry at LaRue County Church of Christ will distribute food to families who qualify from 6-7 p.m. July 28. For more information, call 358-9812.

    Registration for all LCHS students is 8 a.m.-5 p.m. July 22 at the LCHS media center. Be prepared to pay textbook fees of $60 and laptop fees of $20. Laptop fees may be paid up through fall break.

    LCHS will have a special called SBDM meeting 4:30 p.m. July 28 in the conference room. Meeting dates for the remainder of the year will be set.

    The LaRue County Pork Association will meet 7 p.m. July 19 at the LaRue County Extension Service office. A meal will be served. All interested individuals are invited to attend.

     

    Goat and Sheep Producers to meet

    LaRue County Goat and Sheep Producers will meet 7:30 p.m. July 20 at the LaRue County Extension Service office. This year’s LaRue County Fair Goat and Sheep Shows will be discussed. All interested individuals are invited.

    State Fair entry deadlines

  • Ninety-three campers and 14 teen and adult leaders spent four days at Lake Cumberland enjoying swimming, boating, fishing, archery, riflery, arts and crafts, recreation, high ropes, low ropes and outdoor cooking. 

  • The 2010 LaRue County Fair will be July 22-31 and LaRue County residents are encouraged to enter crop and livestock exhibits. Agriculture remains a strong part of the 103rd LaRue County Fair.
