    Vietnam veterans invited to ride in parade

    The Sonora Merchants will sponsor a float for the Heartland Festival Parade 10 a.m. Aug. 28. This year’s theme is “Thank you from the Heartland,” a salute to Vietnam veterans.   • Neeson bows out of Lincoln film...

    Several entertainment magazines reported last week that Liam Neeson has dropped out of playing former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln in a Steven Spielberg film.

    The movie has been in the works since 2005, but put on hold several times as both Neeson and Spielberg took on other projects.

    Neeson, 58, thinks he is too old to play the part and has instead agreed to play Lyndon B. Johnson in a film about civil rights leader Martin Luther King.

    Fall softball signups

    LaRue County Youth Softball is having signups for fall league softball for girls 6-14. This is an instructional league to develop pitching and prepare the girls for the upcoming spring season. The cost is $30 and includes a team T-shirt. Signups are 6-8 p.m. Aug. 19 and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 21. For more information, call Regina Devers at 234-6217.

    Former presidential entertainer...

    David Barr once traveled the world as a percussionist in the United States Army’s band. Today, he’s playing for what he claims is an even larger purpose.

    Barr, now a resident of LaRue County, was born in Ohio and grew up in southern California. He began playing the drums in middle school and found that he had a passion for music and percussion.

    Chamber luncheon

    The LaRue County Chamber of Commerce luncheon is noon Aug. 18 in the Lincoln Museum Community Room. State Rep. Dottie Sims will be guest speaker. LaRue County High School Principal Paul Mullins will be recognized with a Chamber resolution for winning School Administrator of the Year. Cost of the luncheon is $6 per person. The public is invited and chamber members are encouraged to attend and bring a friend.

    Coffey concentrates on healing...

    Tom Coffey figures that since he became manager in 1987, LaRue County Water District Number 1 has laid enough water lines to reach from his office in Buffalo all the way to Birmingham, Ala.

    “It would take you a long way down the road,” said Coffey who was recognized for his 27 years of service Aug. 9 at a retirement cookout in his honor at the water district office.

    Born within a half mile of where the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame and Museum now stands at Renfro Valley, Coffey began working for the water district in 1981.

    State Fair exhibits

    4-H exhibits advancing to the Kentucky State Fair must be brought to the Extension Service office by 8:30 a.m. Aug. 16. Non-perishable items may be submitted any time this week. Items and ribbons will be returned Aug. 30 to the Extension Service office from the State Fair.

  • McDonald named Mother of the Year

    Norma Jean McDonald, long-time member of South Fork Homemakers Club, was honored Monday by the LaRue County Extension Homemakers. She was named Mother of the Year at the LaRue County Fair.

    McDonald is active at South Fork Baptist Church and has served as church pianist and organist. She is president of the Women’s Missionary Union and participates in the Samaritan’s Purse program.

  • Donations needed to expand library...

    Only a few years ago, the main offerings at the LaRue County Public Library were books, newspapers, a handful of books-on-tape and a modest vinyl record collection.

    Today, there is still plenty of reading material but an increasing emphasis on new technologies as the staff attempts to meet customer expectations. The latest novels remain popular, but there is a growing demand for computer time and DVDs – both documentaries and new movie releases.
