  • Students take 'Walk Through...

    Several hundred school children attended “Walk Through Lincoln’s Life” at Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Park last week. Several volunteers from Kentucky and Indiana demonstrated pioneer crafts, games and chores as part of the “educational curriculum based event,” according to the Park’s Web site.

    Sunrise Volunteers benefit

    The Sunrise Volunteers will sponsor a benefit gospel concert 2-4 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Hodgenville Civic Center. Admission is free, but a love offering will be taken with all proceeds going toward the purchase of a digital projector and screen for the new nursing home chapel.

  • Astronaut Leland Melvin to speak at...

     Leland Melvin, a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut, will be a guest speaker at Campbellsville University during a three-day visit Sept. 26-28.

    Melvin will speak at several events on campus including an address to students at FIRST CLASS at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27 in Ransdell Chapel, 401 N. Hoskins Ave., Campbellsville, and an event after that in the Banquet Hall of the Badgett Academic Support Center, 110 University Drive, Campbellsville, from noon to 1 p.m. Both are open to the public.

    Cost share funding

    The LaRue County Conservation District will accept requests through Sept. 30 for cost share funding under the Kentucky Soil Erosion and Water Quality Cost Share and Environmental Stewardship Program. Applications are ranked statewide and approved for funding based on available funds. For more information, stop by the conservation district office at 606-A N Lincoln Blvd., Hodgenville, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday or call 358-3132.

    'Formerly Howell Road'

    LaRue Fiscal Court approved " through an emergency order " the renaming of a county road Aug. 24.

    Howell Road, between Buffalo and Mount Sherman, was renamed LCPL Hanson USMC Road at the meeting in honor of Lance Cpl. Matthias Hanson, 20, who died of combat-related injuries Feb. 21 in Afghanistan.

    Hanson’s family lives on Howell Road and the young Marine is buried in Perkins Cemetery at the end of the road.

    It is time for current 4-H members to re-enroll and new members to join. 4-H is open to LaRue County youth ages 9 to 18. as of Jan. 1. Youth ages 5 to 8 may join 4-H as a Cloverbud. Various project clubs are available to join, or a child may join as a member at large. The 4th and 5th graders at HES and ALES will have a 4-H club meeting at school once a month. 4-H enrollment forms are available from the Extension Service office or http://ces.ca.uky.edu/larue/enrollment.

    Bowens' basement salutes lower...

    When Eddie Bowen wants to refer to a map of the USA, he need look no farther than a stone wall in the basement of his log cabin home in Magnolia.

    Bowen created the 8x15-foot map of the contiguous 48 states by cutting various shaped rocks into recognizable individual states and adhering them to a concrete wall.

    “I really owe this idea to my fifth-grade teacher, Jesse Ruth Hunt, who imprinted in our minds the shapes of the states so we could name them if we saw them,” Bowen said.     

  • Wesley Phillips celebrates 100th...

    Talking to Wesley Phillips gives a person a peek into our history of the past 100 years through the eyes of a man who has experienced changes from horse to rocket transportation, from word-of-mouth to I-phone communication, a man who has lived through two world wars and the Great Depression and is still going strong.

    This Sunday, Buffalo Nazarene Church, where Phillips and his wife Sue attend, will honor with special singing and a meal the man who’ll be a centenarian Sept. 7. The unpretentious Phillips, however, claims no credit for his longevity.

    Keep bystanders away from operating equipment. Also, be aware of people who may have come into the area. Harvesting areas and equipment are no place for children. Always check around equipment before starting or moving it.

  • Disaster loans available as a...

    The U.S. Small Business Administration has made federal economic injury disaster loans available to small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives and most private non-profit organizations in the Second District as a result of the severe storms and flooding that began on April 30.

    A news release from the office of U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie said organizations in the following counties are eligible to apply for assistance: Barren, Breckinridge, Daviess, Edmonson, Grayson, Green, Hancock, Hardin, Hart, LaRue, Marion, Ohio, Taylor, Warren and Washington.

    LaRue County Farm Bureau members Jeremy and Joanna Hinton of Hinton’s Orchard & Farm Market and Robin and Ashley Lee of Lee’s Garden Center joined more than 40 participants of farm markets throughout the state in late July on the Kentucky Farm Bureau’s 2010 Summer Tour of markets in Kentucky, Illinois and Missouri.

    Registration is under way for the annual Becoming an Outdoors-Woman weekend workshop sponsored by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

    “If it’s time that you need, or you want to get out of the house, get a break from the kids for a weekend, learn something new that you can do with your family in the outdoors, and just enjoy the camaraderie of other women with the same interests, then the BOW workshop is squarely on target for you,” said BOW Program Volunteer Coordinator Beth Spivey-Minch.
