When Lisa Nugent began raising butterflies, it was just a project intended to educate her children. But it soon grew to become a hobby and a source of joy.

Nugent began raising butterflies about four years ago when a friend taught her about the process. A “home-school mom” of two sons, she began the butterfly project to teach her kids about life and science. When her sons lost interest in the butterflies, she remained fascinated, and now she raises the creatures for enjoyment.

4-H Council to meet

Ragweed is a common problem to both allergy sufferers and to farmers. In late summer some people suffer allergic reactions to ragweeds and other plant pollens. Ragweed also has the potential to severely interfere with crop production and reduce crop yield.

Individuals who are sensitive to the plant’s pollen are usually very aware of its presence. When plants begin to flower in August and early September, the airborne pollen is the culprit for the severe irritation to sensitive individuals. When exposed to the oil the plant produces, some people even develop a skin rash.

Seventy years ago, a curious little monkey was born.

In 1941, Margret and H.A. Rey published the first of the Curious George books for children. The monkey and his pal, “The Man with the Yellow Hat,” have appeared in numerous renditions including a movie, cartoons and video games.

The LaRue County Public Library and Lincolns Loft will celebrate the occasion with a “Curiosity Day” Saturday.

We often associate certain foods with different countries. Spaghetti is Italian, tacos are Mexican and what could be more American than apple pie? Did you know the very first apples ever eaten grew several thousand years ago in fertile land south of the Black Sea? The history and origins of different fruits and vegetables are as interesting and unique as their taste.

Enrollment open for 4-H

It is time for current 4-H members to re-enroll and new members to join. 4-H is open to LaRue County youth ages 9 to 18. as of Jan. 1, 2011. Youth ages 5 to 8 may join 4-H as a Cloverbud. Various project clubs are available to join, or a child may join as a member at large. The 4th and 5th graders at HES and ALES will have a 4-H club meeting at school once a month.  4-H enrollment forms are available from the Extension Office or http://ces.ca.uky.edu/larue/enrollment.

Chamber luncheon

The LaRue County Chamber of Commerce luncheon will be noon Sept. 15 in the Lincoln Museum Community Room. A representative from kix.com (Kentucky Indiana Exchange) will be guest speaker. For reservations, call 358-3411. Cost of the luncheon is $6 per person. The public is invited and Chamber members are encouraged to attend and bring a friend.

Grandparents honored

Bethlehem High School will hold a Mass honoring grandparents 11 a.m. Sept. 15 at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral. Prior to the Mass, there will be an open house with refreshments 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the Bethlehem High School Cafeteria. Ovesen Heights has women’s conference

Several hundred school children attended “Walk Through Lincoln’s Life” at Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Park last week. Several volunteers from Kentucky and Indiana demonstrated pioneer crafts, games and chores as part of the “educational curriculum based event,” according to the Park’s Web site.
