    Cost share funding

    The LaRue County Conservation District will accept requests through Sept. 30 for cost share funding under the Kentucky Soil Erosion and Water Quality Cost Share and Environmental Stewardship Program. Applications are ranked statewide and approved for funding based on available funds.     Elementary school students will be released at 1:15 p.m. Fridays; middle and high school students will be released at 1:30 p.m. Fridays.

    Fourth District Choir practice is 2:45-4 p.m. Sept. 23. The group will perform 4 p.m. Sept. 25 at Bardstown Baptist Church.

  • Heat stress can affect pregnancy...

    Heat stress reduces conception rate of cows to 30-35 percent and can result in fetal loss between 25-45 days of pregnancy. Both of these factors have lead to low pregnancy rates this year.

    Pregnancy checking of cattle is a valuable management tool to know about and deal with this situation. Checking for pregnancy will allow a beef producer to make timely culling decisions and focus resources on the sound, reliable breeders.

  • Level I drought declared in state

    The Office of the State Climatologist and the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet, in coordination with the Kentucky Drought Mitigation Team, are issuing a Level I Drought Declaration for five drought management areas in western and central Kentucky. These five areas are in addition to the three currently under the Level I declaration.

    Hardin, Grayson and Meade are within the new Level I drought declaration areas. Serious impacts to agricultural water needs, wildfire risk and other water-sensitive sectors can be expected in the designated areas.

  • 4-H Club members excel at State Fair

    Congratulations to all the 4-H members who competed at the Kentucky State Fair. Cloverville was filled with 4-H entries from across the state of Kentucky. Projects ranged from sewing to entomology to arts and crafts. 

    LaRue County 4-H members exhibited a total of 45 projects in Cloverville, as well as 26 rabbit entries. Results are:

  • 4-H Points System record sheets due

    The 4-H year runs Sept. 1-Aug. 31. It’s time for members to submit their 4-H Awards Point System Record Sheets.

    Record sheets are simply a record of the 4-H activities or events a member has participated in during the past year. Points are assigned for various events, depending on the level of participation. 

    Cloverbuds (ages 5-8) are eligible to submit a record form as well in order to receive recognition.

  • Butterfly hobby becomes a source of...

    When Lisa Nugent began raising butterflies, it was just a project intended to educate her children. But it soon grew to become a hobby and a source of joy.

    Nugent began raising butterflies about four years ago when a friend taught her about the process. A “home-school mom” of two sons, she began the butterfly project to teach her kids about life and science. When her sons lost interest in the butterflies, she remained fascinated, and now she raises the creatures for enjoyment.

    Hawks homecoming is Friday

    Football homecoming is Sept. 24. The Hawks will take on the Elizabethtown Panthers. LaRue County Youth Football players will be introduced.

    Rotary fundraiser

    The Hodgenville Rotary Club will host a punt, pass, kick fundraiser at the home football game Sept. 24. Check with any Rotarian for more information.

  • Ragweed is a bane to farmers and...

    Ragweed is a common problem to both allergy sufferers and to farmers. In late summer some people suffer allergic reactions to ragweeds and other plant pollens. Ragweed also has the potential to severely interfere with crop production and reduce crop yield.

    Individuals who are sensitive to the plant’s pollen are usually very aware of its presence. When plants begin to flower in August and early September, the airborne pollen is the culprit for the severe irritation to sensitive individuals. When exposed to the oil the plant produces, some people even develop a skin rash.

  • Library, Loft plan Curiosity Day

    Seventy years ago, a curious little monkey was born.

    In 1941, Margret and H.A. Rey published the first of the Curious George books for children. The monkey and his pal, “The Man with the Yellow Hat,” have appeared in numerous renditions including a movie, cartoons and video games.

    The LaRue County Public Library and Lincolns Loft will celebrate the occasion with a “Curiosity Day” Saturday.

  • 4-H enrollment under way for 2010-11

    4-H enrollment is under way for 2010-11. School club meetings are being held for fourth and fifth graders. These students have the opportunity to sign up and participate in 4-H at school.

    However, 4-H is open to all youth ages 9 to 18. All current members must complete a new 4-H enrollment form each year in order to remain a member. 4-H Cloverbud activities are also available for 5 to 8 year olds. The 4-H year goes from Sept. 1 through Aug. 31.

Did you know the very first apples ever eaten grew several thousand years ago in fertile land south of the Black Sea? The history and origins of different fruits and vegetables are as interesting and unique as their taste.

    LaRue County Goat and Sheep Producers will meet 7 p.m. Sept. 21 at the LaRue County Extension Service office following the 6:30 p.m. meal. All interested individuals are invited.

    Chamber luncheon

    The LaRue County Chamber of Commerce luncheon will be noon Sept. 15 in the Lincoln Museum Community Room. A representative from kix.com (Kentucky Indiana Exchange) will be guest speaker. For reservations, call 358-3411. Cost of the luncheon is $6 per person. The public is invited and Chamber members are encouraged to attend and bring a friend.

    Sunrise Volunteers

    A benefit gospel concert will be 2-4 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Hodgenville Civic Center. Admission is free, but a love offering will be taken with all proceeds going toward the purchase of a digital projector and screen for the new nursing home chapel. Performers include Mike Ash, Ronnie Benningfield, Charles Durham, the Grimes Family, Jim Kessler, Amy Loyall and Meadowlarks from Wesley Meadows Church.
