ENGAGEMENT: Laura Stewart and...

Laura Stewart and Craig Bell would like to announce their upcoming marriage on May 31, 2013, at Pleasant Valley United Baptist Church in Millwood.

The bride to be is the daughter of Carol Jr., and Lola Stewart of Millwood. She is a certified surgical technologist/first assistant at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown.

The prospective groom is the son of Tommy and Frankie Bell of Hodgenville and is the owner of Craig Bell Electric in Hodgenville.

LCHS students honored in Stossel...

Stossel in the Classroom announced the winners of its third annual student essay contest on May 13.

Local winners of the essay contest are Matthew Crain, Carly Higdon and Audry Schafer, all semi-finalists. Jeremy Luttrell and Heaven Clater both received honorable mentions. All five students attend LaRue County High School and are students in Dee Hutchins’ class.

Hawks defeat Hart, Washington

 The LaRue County Hawks defeated Hart County 7-5 on May 7.

Coffeehouse Night held at ALES

A large crowd attended the fourth annual coffeehouse concert at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School. About five budding poets and the ensemble offered their renditions of poetry and song to the snaps of fingered applause.

Poets included Addie Cundiff, Nick Vazquez, Mason Lane, Hannah Gregory and Beverly Heady.

Abell falls in first round at...

LaRue County senior Ryan Abell fell in state tennis tournament play this past Thursday in his first round of play to North Oldham Senior Tyler Kilambi.

Abell said that nothing felt right to him all day. “My inside-out forehand wasn’t good. He was keeping it in and being aggressive with my backhand. He kept on hitting his inside-out very well. I couldn’t serve all day,” said Abell.

Magistrates reappointed John Detre and Pat Eastridge to the LaRue County Water District Number One board while meeting at the LaRue County Courthouse May 14.
Terms of Detre, chairman, and Eastridge, commissioner, will expire in May 2017.
The court concurred with Land of Lincoln Planning and Zoning’s approval to rezone one acre of land at 1493 Weldon Loop belonging to Brenda Johnson from A1 to R1A and an acre at 155 Knob Schoolhouse Road, Garry Hayes owner, from A1 to R1B.

As heavy clouds loomed overhead, hundreds gathered at the 14th annual Kentucky Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony to honor the sacrifice of eight Kentucky law enforcement officers who gave their lives in service to the Commonwealth.  
“The Kentucky Law Enforcement Memorial monument now contains 509 names,” Gov. Steve Beshear said. “Behind those 509 names are 509 stories of heroic action, 509 examples of duty and courage that inspire all who wear the badge.

Girls’ relay team qualifies for...

 Several LaRue County athletes placed high in the Class 2A Region 2 Track and Field championship last week. The girls’ 4X400 relay team, consisting of Amanda Brewer, Kristina Durbin, Nichole Thomas and Natalie Mullins qualified for the State Track Meet this weekend.

Relay For Life donation

Allison Shepherd, general manager of The LaRue County Herald News, presented a check for $335 to Kathy Ross, Survivor chairperson for LaRue County Relay for Life. The newspaper collected donations for “in memory of” and “in honor of” ads for those who have battled cancer.
