Reduce food waste by planning and recycling

 In 2010, the single largest component of municipal solid waste being sent to landfills was not paper or plastic, aluminum cans or glass, but food waste. Roughly 33 million tons of food wastes were thrown out in 2010. Food waste, which includes uneaten food and food preparation scraps, can be hard on our environment and our wallets.

The old adage has been used to refer to anything that is underappreciated. It’s easily understood by anyone who has gone for any amount of time without a reliable water supply.
The day Karl Highbaugh’s home was hooked up to a LaRue County public waterline is one of his most memorable.
For about two years, Highbaugh “hauled water” in milk jugs from a nearby farm to his home between Hodgenville and Sonora.

Hepatitis outbreak was impetus for clean water

A little more than 50 years ago, a young boy fell victim to an outbreak of hepatitis.
Dale Meers spent part of his summer break under a doctor’s care as his parents, John T. and Genrose, worried about his prognosis as they heard of other cases in the Buffalo area.
His physician, Dr. Carson Crabtree, believed the outbreak of hepatitis was linked to dirty water.
Hepatitis, a broad term for inflammation of the liver, is linked to poor sanitation. It can be mild – lasting a couple of weeks –or disabling.

ENGAGEMENT: Katie Meredith and Tyler Hornback

Kevin and Karen Meredith are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Katie Meredith, to Tyler Hornback, son of Dean and Kelly Hornback.

Tyler and Katie are high school sweethearts. Katie works for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet; Tyler works for Hornback Construction.

Their wedding is 5:30 p.m. May 25, 2013, at South Fork Baptist Church. A private reception will follow.

FSA considering new contracts under CRP

 The Farm Service Agency is accepting new offers and approving new contracts under CRP’s Continuous, CREP, FWP, and SAFE signups.

The 4-H Cloverbuds will meet 3:30-4:45 p.m. May 15 at the Extension office. The Cloverbud program is open to ages 5 to 8 or kindergarten through third grade. For more information, call the Extension office at 358-3401.

Child injured by wringer washer

A small child was injured last week when his arm was caught in a wringer washer.

LaRue County Deputy Russell McCoy received a call to do a welfare check on the child, estimated to be between 2 and 3 years old.

“His parents had taken him to Taylor Regional Hospital after his arm was caught in a wringer washer,” McCoy said. “They were told to (take the child) to Kosair’s and they never went.”
