Derek Bell named new soccer coach

 Derek Bell has been named the new boys’ head soccer coach at LaRue County High School following former head coach Chuck Holloway’s resignation due to health concerns.

Bell, who has served as Hawks’ assistant coach since 2008, praised Holloway who launched the soccer program at LCHS, coaching co-ed and later boys’ and girls’ teams.

Murder, burglary trial: Hair to be photographed, then tested

Defense and prosecuting attorneys in a Buffalo murder case have been arguing about the testing of a single hair found at the alleged crime scene since February.

Monday, they came to an agreement: The hair will undergo mitochondrial DNA testing at a Minnesota lab – after it has been photographed microscopically.

Smith’s show-stopping blossoms: bright, bold and beautiful

Blossoms of all shapes and sizes, entwined with rock patterns greet traveling cars and bicyclists on a short section of Howardstown Road.

The landscaping outside the home of Anne and Murrell Smith, has caused many a driver to stop in their tracks or ease slowly down the road to soak in all the beautiful colors and handiwork.

Anne, the master landscape artist, has worked on the project for four years.

United Way allocations are up

United Way of Central Kentucky’s record-breaking campaign is providing money to 20 organizations in its five-county service region this year, a high for the agency.

It also plans to fund two organizations for the first time: Breckinridge County Schools and Shepherd’s Pie food pantry in LaRue County.

United Way’s fundraising campaign yielded more than $1.1 million to further its mission, increasing allocations by more than $153,000, said Executive Director Christopher Wilborn. In all, $873,528.37 will be distributed.

It’s never too late to earn a GED

William Chesser of Magnolia recently accomplished something he had not thought possible.

Chesser, 67, recently received his GED – a high school equivalency diploma. It took almost two years of studying but he stuck to it and can now be called a graduate.

Chesser said it was something he had always wanted to do but working and supporting a family left him with little spare time. So when the opportunity presented itself after retirement, he took the plunge.
