140 to attend 'Cool School'

School will be exceptionally “cool” at Hodgenville Elementary next week.

HES and Abraham Lincoln Elementary’s family resource centers, with the district’s youth service center, are sponsoring Cool School – five days of learning and experimenting with an emphasis on fun for LaRue County first-through-fifth-grade students.

It's county fair time, livestock shows aplenty

The LaRue County Fair has a new date this year of June 14-22, but continues to feature many livestock and crop shows and displays.

Livestock entries are generally open to the world, but must meet several requirements including Exhibition Health Requirements with a health certificate and ownership by certain date. Some livestock show classes require an entry fee, some do not.

Eastern Livestock owners sentenced

The former owner and former chief operating officer of now-bankrupt Eastern Livestock Company, LLC, were sentenced in U. S. District Court last week, by Senior Judge Thomas B. Russell, for mail fraud arising from their part in a check-kiting scheme that caused the loss of millions of dollars to hundreds of businesses and individuals.

About 200 sellers of cattle in Kentucky, did business with Eastern Livestock in 2010, according to David J. Hale, United States Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky.

When a refrigerator croaks – when its compressor bleats its last breath – you have no choice.

You must get another one – pronto – or risk losing all those interesting things you have stored that probably should have been thrown out weeks earlier.

But that’s beside the point.

Letter to the Editor

I loved the pictures of the mini mall that were in the newspaper recently. These pictures were on page 22A and each picture had a caption beside, or below, with names and what the students were selling.

The one thing that was missing from the collection of pictures was acknowledgement to the company that completed the shirts for the students. Blazin’ Xpressions in Hodgenville did all the shirts for the students to wear at the mini mall.

Civil war veterans receive new gravemarkers

Seven Civil War veterans, whose gravestones had deteriorated, received new federal markers at Magnolia Cemetery, just in time for Memorial Day.

The Magnolia Cemetery Committee and Magnolia Lions Club worked together to identify the gravesites, order the markers and decorate with American flags.

There are now 114 identifiable veterans in the large cemetery outside Magnolia Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  

New version of credit card scam reported

Kentucky is among the top eight states with the highest credit card fraud rates in the U.S. according to Statistic Brain.com.

A Campbellsville man avoided being among the victims and wants to warn others of the scam.

Lindsey “Junior” Beard received a card in the mail in May with the retail business names of Wal-Mart and Target on it, which supposedly could be used at any retail store.

On the card, there was a number to call for its activation.

More voyeurism charges filed against former dispatcher

More charges have been filed against a former Hodgenville man accused of secretly videotaping an underage girl at his home.

James Orley Absher, 50, of Columbia and formerly of Hodgenville and Elizabethtown, was charged in March and December with several counts of promoting a minor in a sexual performance and voyeurism in LaRue County.

He faces nine additional counts of voyeurism in Hardin County.
