EHLRTA to meet
The Elizabethtown, Hardin, LaRue Retired Teachers’ Association will have the last meeting of the 2012-13 year at 11:30 a.m. May 16, in the atrium of Severns Valley Baptist Church, 1100 Ring Road, Elizabethtown. Lunch is $10. The program will feature end-of-year activities, installation of 2013-14 officers and recognitions. The community service project is peanut butter. Double Buck Burger Eating Contest
There will be a Double Buck Burger Eating Contest 6:30 p.m. May 17 at Bucksnort Cafe, Sonora. There is a $10 entry fee. All proceeds benefit the Sonora Veterans Memorial Park. For more information, contact Gale Hornback at 270-734-2483.

Public input sought for disadvantaged business enterprise involvement

There will be a public input session on May 17 at 634 E Dixie Hwy, Elizabethtown, KY 42702, regarding the proposed goals for increasing Disadvantaged Business Enterprise  involvement in highway projects.

The Office of Civil Rights and Small Business Development will accept input on methodology and goals for the 2014 federal fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.

This information will be included online at http://transportation.ky.gov/Civils-Rights-and-Small-Business-Development from May 26 to June 25.

Water District benefits about 99 percent of county

You never miss the water ‘til the well runs dry.
The old adage has been used to refer to anything that is underappreciated. It’s easily understood by anyone who has gone for any amount of time without a reliable water supply.
The day Karl Highbaugh’s home was hooked up to a LaRue County public waterline is one of his most memorable.
For about two years, Highbaugh “hauled water” in milk jugs from a nearby farm to his home between Hodgenville and Sonora.

Bardstown Road to be reduced to one lane

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet awarded a contract for asphalt rehabilitation for LaRue County projects in May.

A 4.57-mile section of New Haven Road (U.S. 31-E) from the north side of Lincoln Square to just north of Ky. 84 was approved.

Scotty’s Contracting and Stone LLC was awarded the contract for $382,014. Completion date is Nov. 15.

The reconstruction of Enlow, Devers and Boyhood Home curves and culvert work on U.S. 31-E continues.

Propes is a community treasure
I met Donnie Propes in 1986, while his wife Janet served as the county treasurer. It was easy to tell that they were both God fearing people who loved their community and were willing to do anything for their friends and family.
Janet was taken far too early in life from all of us, as we lost a wonderful lady in our community. But Donnie picked up the pieces and carried on as Janet and God would want him to.
