  • Jamboree fan

It has been a long time since I went to the Lincoln Jamboree.

My family and I went Saturday night and it was great. Rick Whitlock and Blake Whitlock were wonderful (a few Johnny Cash songs). Joel Ray needed a haircut but that didn’t stop his jokes. And the price was just $8. Movies are $8 and you only get half the fun.

At intermission, there was soft ice cream and the singers sold tapes and gave interviews.

Thank you, Joel Ray, for the memories. I wish you would bring the raffle back at intermission.

  • Jaden's Day a success

We want to thank everyone who had a part in making Jaden’s Day 2010 Celebration a success. We raised and donated $1,000 to the Ronald McDonald House.

A special thanks to Lee’s Famous Recipe for their donation of cole slaw for our plate dinners we sold and for The LaRue County Herald News for sharing our story about Jaden.

  • Patriotism conflicts with ‘content neutral’ territory

Truism: It’s OK to sing the National Anthem at any place, any time, in the United States.

    This truism is not true.

There are always exceptions. Sometimes it’s inappropriate to sing period. Please do not ever sit behind me and sing in a movie theater. You may end up wearing a box of popcorn.

Besides that – if you thought, like me, that your freedom to express patriotism is unlimited in our country, you would be wrong.

You cannot sing the National Anthem at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

  • Free prostate screenings available at State Fair

An unprecedented 11 consecutive days of free prostate cancer screenings will be offered in the South Wing Health Horizons during the Kentucky State Fair between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily.

  • Love those volunteers

I urge you to find and highlight the individuals who volunteered to beautify the downtown area Aug. 18. They were planting flowers and cleaning up.

They appeared to consist mainly of “The Gang,” a local group of retirees that meet for lunch and fellowship regularly, plus some others. I hesitate to mention names for fear of leaving someone out, although Paul Orr did threaten me with potting soil when I asked if he had any supervision.

I appreciate them taking their time to perform this service.

  • Fun Day: No complaints from the kids

My husband Bud and I spent Saturday evening dragging around a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old (our respective grandchildren). Actually, I think it was Chase and Claire who did the dragging.

We spent a couple of hours at Family Fun Day at Creekfront Park. It’s the third year Hodgenville Main Street and the City of Hodgenville have put on the event.

And thank you, thank you for moving Fun Day to the evening. The cooler temperatures meant the grandbabies could stay out longer.
