• Myth or reality: The Walter Mitty Life

So many of us judge our own lives to be boring and uneventful. We long for something, anything, to happen. We long to be SOMEBODY. To accomplish something. We long for a fiction. I always think about “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” the short story by James Thurber in which the main character entertains himself with imaginary fame and glory.

The short story was made into a 1947 movie starring Danny Kaye and then remade in a 2013 movie starring Ben Stiller.

  • Plan for your retirement savings

Working hard, paying bills and putting money aside for your needs and wants in the “now” are so often automatic in our day-to-day lives. However, you also need to think about your future retirement plans. According to the 2015 Retirement Confidence Survey from the Employee Benefit Research Institute, nearly one-third of workers have almost no retirement savings or investments (under $1,000) and a staggering 57% are underprepared with less than $25,000 for retirement.

Illegal computer hacking of your personal information is so prevalent today that many people simply feel defenseless to protect themselves. But you are not totally defenseless! • Life lessons learned from Lincoln

I have been studying about Abraham Lincoln more in depth since I started working at the LaRue County Herald News.

I think we can all agree that Lincoln was a successful man who made a positive impact on millions of lives. As president, Lincoln abolished slavery and led our country through the Civil War, which was one of the most trying times in our nation’s history.

  • Pows and wows!

I don’t know why God does what he does. But we are always comforted by the adage that there is a reason for everything or the saying that God can make lemonade out of lemons. We Christians ask our questions and then wait for His answer. That works for us. We pause, and we learn. I get that.

    By State Representative Terry Mills

As we ready to celebrate the Fourth of July on Saturday, it’s worth remembering the words President Kennedy spoke at Philadelphia’s Independence Hall a little more than five decades ago.

Words cannot express how excited I am to be the editor of the LaRue County Herald News.

I was born and raised in Rockcastle County and had lived there my entire life. I worked as the news editor of the county newspaper, the Mount Vernon Signal, for more than three years.

As many of you know from your own experiences, it can be scary and difficult to leave your hometown for a different job, to go to college, etc. However, this was not the case for me when I left Rockcastle County to become the editor of the LaRue County Herald.
