  • COLUMN: Children will make their own memories at the fair

The LaRue County Fair is now in full swing. Miss LaRue County and Miss Teen LaRue County have been crowned, (congrats by the way), and several more events are scheduled each of the remaining nights.
My first experience at the fair was interesting. Well, if we’re being honest it was downright awful.
It was four years ago, a few months after my husband Shane and I moved here. I can recall that I was hot, muggy, dirty and damp. Oh, and nine months pregnant. I’m pretty sure that’s why it was awful.

  • COLUMN: Support your community, visit the fair and have a blast

As time goes by, I realize more and more just how working together makes the world a better place. I see that every day in this community. With that in mind, I also see what happens when people don’t take action to participate in local events, and would prefer to be critical instead of getting involved.

  • COLUMN: Old phone is smart enough to make calls

The first time I saw one of those strange little QR codes in an advertisement, I thought it was a mistake. It looked like a graphic artist had mangled a photo or barcode.
Quick Response codes have been around since the mid-1990s but their popularity has increased since the introduction of “smartphones.”
They’ve even been showing up in ads in The LaRue County Herald News.

  • COLUMN: QR codes and smartphones are the wave of the future

Facebook, Twitter, television, email, mp3 player, video chat and weather updates are only a few things I can do on my phone. Why? Because it’s smart.
I’m one of the one-out-of-three Americans who have turned to relying on smartphone devices for everyday uses. I use it to keep up with my friends on social sites, communicate via email to family members and work, and my favorite of all, schedule my television to DVR shows automatically (Like American Idol).
I rely on my phone for most everything I do, but sometimes it’s smarter than me.

  • COLUMN: Really, Miss Thang, these new Scrabble words have gone too far

It’s very possible that I have dropped my last little wooden tile.
Yes, I’m an avid Scrabble player, and it’s a game my family and I enjoy playing together, but some recent changes are just too much.

  • COLUMN: 'Milky Moo' kicked bucket of memories for farmer's daughter

    June is Dairy Month.
It’s a good time to reflect on how times have changed. LaRue County once had dozens of dairy farms. Today, there are four.
Another rarity is the family milk cow. That may evoke thoughts of “Little House on the Prairie” and “Old Bessie” with a bell around her neck. But for many of us, a good milk cow was more than a joke on an old TV show. She contributed to the family’s livelihood and was in some cases, a pet.

  • COLUMN: Joining the Herald News' staff led to wonderful and stinky situations

It’s been a little over a year since I started work at The LaRue County Herald News and it still feels new – which is a good thing. The job never gets boring and just when it seems like things are falling routine – something will come up.

  • COLUM: A cloud of fear mongering mushrooms after Japan's tsunami

  • ChooseMyPlate.gov offers a new guide

The USDA has unveiled a new logo to use as a food guide for consumers. You can find it at ChooseMyPlate.gov. The graphic is to remind us to use half our dining plates for fruits and vegetables and to also work in whole grains in our daily food choices.

  • COLUMN: And baby makes five ...

When my daughter was very young, I once told her that when she had children, I hoped she had a dozen because she would drive one or two insane.
It was not one of my finer moments but I think she has forgiven me and perhaps even understands how I was feeling at the time.
Amanda, by the age of 3, had spoken probably twice as many words as I had as an adult. And twice as fast. She was incredibly organized, had way too much energy and wise beyond her years.
