  • Utility increases power rates

    The Kentucky Public Service Commission has accepted a settlement that permits Farmers Rural Electric Cooperative Corp. to raise its rates in order to increase its annual revenue by $3.69 million, or about 9.8 percent.

    Farmers negotiated the settlement – which gives the rural electric cooperative about $350,000 less in annual revenue than it requested – with the Office of Attorney General.

  • Fields are ready for the harvest

    This summer it has been a real joy to drive through the countryside and see the beautiful crops. One can almost see and hear the corn grow. We’ve had ample good rain and the temperature has been moderate. How grateful the farmers should be, considering some recent years when not enough rain and other adverse conditions produced a less than desirable yield.

    BR Young Lodge breakfast

    BR Young Lodge No. 132 will hold an all-you-can-eat breakfast and open house 8-10 a.m. Sept. 5 at the Masonic building on the square in Hodgenville. A small donation is requested for the bacon, sausage and pancakes meal. For more information, call Paul Withington at 324-3325.

    An attempt to falsely obtain credit card and checking account information has been aimed at classified advertising customers.

  • State issues drunken driving warning

    The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety will join law enforcement and highway safety agencies across the nation in the “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest” crackdown on impaired driving, which continues through Labor Day.

    Drunken driving is one of America’s deadliest crimes. More than 13,000 people are killed nationwide each year in highway crashes involving a driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol  concentration (BAC) of 0.08 or  higher.

  • Park to host Labor Day program

    The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Park will host a Bicentennial celebration on Labor Day, Sept. 7.

    Music will be provided by Anne Milligan. Living history presentations will be provided by costumed interpreters from Frazier International History Museum at 11 a.m. by Eric Franz; and 2 p.m. by Zoe Jackson.

    Franz portrays Lincoln, reflecting on his life up to his election as an Illinois State Representative.

    The American Red Cross, Hardin/LaRue Service Center, held its annual golf scramble July 31 at the Lincoln Trail Country Club in Vine Grove. More than $6,700 was raised to benefit the Red Cross Disaster Services Program. Eighty golfers played in an 18-hole team scramble, with a complimentary lunch, goody bag, door prize for each player and cash prizes. Thanks go to The Cecilian Bank for co-sponsoring and helping with the event.

  • Lady Hawks on hot streak after Logan tourney

    The competition was tough at Fort Knox Aug. 25, but the Lady Hawk volleyball team pulled out a hard-won victory (25-20; 25-18) over the Lady Eagles of Fort Knox.

    “We had a difficult time with Fort Knox. I have several girls who are sick and who were coughing on the sideline throughout the match but we still focused and did what we had to do to win,” said Coach Ben Schell.
